PCM Service Advisory - Updated Oil Specifications

The more I think about this bulletin, the more I’m somewhat confused. It isn’t that I don’t trust PCM (though they did assemble my H6 without a catalyst in an exhaust manifold), but why the Dexos 2 focus all of the sudden? They say that the engines were designed for Dexos 2 formulations, even older ones... Something is amiss here. I use Rotella 5W-40 T6 full syn, as I want cold start flow. PCM was good with this (as I discussed my plan with them after my missing catalyst debacle). Again, they wouldn’t have posted the bulletin for no reason. I’m an oil geek, and regularly haunt the Bobis the Oil Guy (BITOG) forum; I understand formulations and the emphasis on certain elements in the oil for protection, but something seems amiss. I’m going to try to call PCM to get a cogent explanation.

I jumped from the 15W-40 Rotella in the engine originally (on my third oil change) to Rotella 5W-40 T6 full synthetic. I called PCM to discuss as I did this; while they thought this was overkill to use full syn, they said it was fine to use. I will stay with this oil. I change way in advance of the hours requirement, but not in advance of “120 days” as this bulletin advises. I’ll sleep fine with my plan.

All the premium 5w30 Dexos Gen2 synthetics like Mobil, Castrol, Royal Purple etc are $8-9 a qt.

that Rotella 5w30 synthetic is $4-5/qt. Great value. Makes an oil change <$40.

Hi Guys, hope you can help we have a 2018 200 closed bow with the 6.0 litre and I am now told the oil spec is changed. Here in UK I can only find either Dexos1 Gen2 or Dexos2

I cannot find a Dexos Gen2 are either of these equivalent? thank you in advance

Upon further reading I think the Dexos1 Gen2 is for gas engines and the Dexos2 diesel? so have gone for the Castrol Magnitec DX 5w/30 Dexos1 Gen2 Fully synthetic

Went with this for the 7.4 LSX in the 2020 PN G23. This engine seems to be using a lot of oil during break-in. I am at about 7 hours and I am into the second quart of added oil so far.

By the way, this oil at AutoZone was $4.00 per quart, which comes out to be a little less expensive than the Wal-Mart price posted earlier for the 5-quart jug.

AutoZone also has a mail-in rebate on this oil -- $2 rebate per quart, up to a max rebate of $40. That would make the price $10 for 5 quarts at AutoZone versus $21.57 at Wal-Mart. Pretty good deal I think!

Did the dealer tell you to watch the oil closely? Are these 7.4 engines known for consuming oil?

No, they didn't, and they are surprised it is using so much too. I am not sure they have had any other 7.4 engines yet though. I am just glad I checked it when I did.

So when I was at Nautiques I’d Orlando they said they use this type of oil...



This seems odd because it doesn’t match anything that the PCM memo said. Also, with the new requirements it’s easier to calculate the reentry coordinates of a SpaceX rocket than determine the correct oil after 2010.

I know this is an old topic, but what the heck type of oil do I use, I think Shell T6 Rotella is acceptable, but I’m not sure if the full synthetic is needed.

This is the 10 hour oil change of the new engine in my 2004 210 SANTE.

SM is no longer specd with Shell but it’s the same oil isn’t it?

Also I know the GT-4 is no longer the correct designation, but rather GT-5 is the right designation.

Either way, I need oil for an oil change tomorrow, what’s correct?

Which engine is in your 210?

If it is the Excalibur, you should use15W-40. The GF-4 designation doesn't apply to this weight of oil, so not sure what to tell you there, but most people just use Rotella 15W-40.

If it is the ZR6 (or if you're lucky enough to have a Python), you should use any Dexos Gen 2 5W-30 oil.

If this new engine is something other than what came from the factory in 2004, post up what engine you have and we'll help you figure out the proper oil.

Very strange that Nautique of Orlando would be using an oil that doesn't meet the (old or new) spec.

It is the Excalibur 330. It is a new build (2019) don’t think that matters much though.

So does it matter T6 full synthetic or should I do blend?
