What ballast should I add to a stock SAN230?

I just got my 2014 SAN230 out on the water for the first time (for me) with the stock ballast (hard tanks only). What should I add to get started? Someone suggested 1000lbs in each locker, and then under the bow cushions as well. What mfg? What is a good balance between front and rear ballast? I trailer the boat, so lead is fine, but would rather not rely on it if I have to take a lot of it out each time. If there is a thread that discusses this already, feel free to point me in that direction too.

    Thanks for the help!

There’s a surf thread here somewhere for the 230. That’ll give you an idea of what people are adding even if you don’t primarily surf. I personally run piggyback sacks on top of the hard tanks that are 800 each and the Fly High 650lb u-shaped bag up front. The 800s don’t fill all the way sitting on top of the tanks and don’t drain well. I’m probably going to go with 1,100s in the off-season and take out the rear tanks. The front is fine but I may put a couple hundred pounds of lead up there. That’s more for wakeboarding than surfing though. For surfing the 230 seems to really like rear weight. I’m still dialing things in but this has been great for me so far.

      Thank you.

Are the 800s tough to drain because the bag is a little too big? Or just simply harder to fill? Also, was the Fly High 650 a good fit?

Thanks for the help! Truly appreciate it.

It’s that stupid wedge shape to the rear tanks that make it hard to drain. Everything above the tank drains fine. The bags hold water at the wedge. Check valves help but not enough. Sometimes hundreds of pounds will be left in the bag. This doesn’t happen up front where the bag is strictly higher than the tank. Bag size really doesn’t matter. It will fill what it can and push the rest out the vent.

As far as the u-shaped bag it fits fine. It slightly bulges up the front cushion when full. Some people hate that. I don’t care.
