G23 - cosmetic gelcoat stress cracks?

    Hi,

Starting to shop for a used G23.
Anyone seen gelcoat stress cracks at top outer of corner of trimaran hull? This would be early - 2013. And adjacent to the corner lights and top forward sea deck pad.
Don’t look like an structural issue to me but thought I’d query those with real knowledge.
    Thanks
    DW

I haven't heard of that being a common issue. Got any pictures?

I once saw an early G23, maybe a 2013 or 2014 which had stress cracks on the top deck. It was attributed to one of those classic situations where a wealthy Dad buys a boat and hands the keys to his teenage sons with no supervision or oversight. They beat the **** out of it, caused stress cracks and I think burned up an engine if I recall. I would be a little leery of what that boat has been through unless the rest of it is pristine.

Avoid handing the boat over to teenagers unsupervised....they can destroy an anvil. A G23 would be no problem.

In all seriousness, I have no idea what was done to the boat. This was a used boat on a dealers lot and that was the explanation I was given as to why it already had an engine replacement and cracks on the top deck. I would only be guessing as to what the kids did to it when Dad wasn't looking.

That is not always the case though. Sometimes a well taken care of boat, has some stress cracks.

I was going to say maybe they hit a dock or something based on the location, but usually there would be a noticeable central point from which the cracks originate and spread from... that’s not the case in either of your pics. Might just be a strange weak spot in the layup that’s caused some cosmetic cracks. Any decent fiberglass repair guy should be able to grind out the cracks and repair them without issue.

My 2013 has similar cracks in the exact same location. Depends a lot on the climate the boat is in as well. In Canada we have like 50 degree swings in temperature that happen rather quickly. Cosmetic only and can be repaired if you don’t like the look of them. But they will probably reappear after a short while.

I've seen cracks like these in couple boats MC X1s on our lake that were way sacked out with lead bags added as well. There are a lot of factors but crazy ballast certainly doesn't help.

Oh and both the boats that I saw were used by the same group of teenage boys on the lake. They beat the heck out of those boats (and their dirt bikes, jet skis, wakeboards, tubes etc. etc. ......) but boys will be boys especially if they have no respect for the toys they're given.

My 08 210 with 1200 hours dosn't have any cracks. My guess is it may have something to do with the ramped up production schedule .

Could be. I don't know. I think I have about as many really stupid production issues on both my 2008 210, and 2014 g21. But it would be interesting to know from a fiberglass export if there what if any correlation there is between workmanship and spider cracks or if more about temperature swings, or other issues (thickness or prep or something).

Appreciate the comments. The boat did spend time in Canada apparently. That might or might not be relevant.
I don’t believe it is structural.
seems like the issue isn’t totally isolated.
