    Wakeboat Ban/Restriction Survey

If you're worried about wakeboat bans/restrictions in your state. Help stop NH from leading the charge. If you're not in NH your state could use any other states successful legislature as a road map. Fill out the survey from NH LAKES org.

While I don't necessarily disagree with some of the recommendations in those questions a lot of the wording is suggestive and provide a very slippery slope to interpretation. The interesting questions to me were about vegetation and ground cover growth. We have this on several lakes in Northern Mi and it's total sham. Taken to it's extreme (as it has been on several lakes) you can be fined for cutting down or deposing of a tree that has died and fallen across your property. I heard of one case (don't know if this is true) of a property owner not being allowed to cut grass or clear a path to the lake on his own property. These kinds of laws regarding restrictions of use should make everyone nervous.

Yikes, that is a slippery slope. What is their definition of a "wakeboat"?? On smaller lakes there is often a counter-clockwise rotation rule/law, how would that work with their "deep water line of travel"?? If filtering ballast tanks will that also include live wells?? Not a fan of more rules on any level however these massive continuous waves can certainly be an issue, scary stuff for sure.

Interesting that anybody can sub me it the survey but never be affected by or a part of boating in NH Lakes. I agree there is some slippery slope language. And yes, if ballasts are targeted than so should live wells.

Just voted and passed along to family and friends. I boat in NH and Maine regularly, and this would really put a damper on things. Unfortunately people don’t realize boats are not the problem, it’s the uneducated people buying them.

The survey basically tells you what they are going to do and it will be referenced as, "this is what people wanted". I'm afraid "wakeboats" (which every boat produces) are gonna loose on this one but I get it. If I was on a small lake I would be hating surfships as well although not to my own demise. Maybe pushing an education requirement would be a step around more stringent legislation. I will submit...Good luck.

Appreciate it. It’s funny you mention the education aspect, that’s exactly the comment I recommended on the survey instead of just completely banning this type of boat.

Here in Prior Lake, MN a couple years back, there were some proposals brought before the City Council not to ban the boats per-se, but to limit where high-wakes could be generated. In the extreme proposal, high wakes were banned for the whole lake. In less drastic proposals, it was 600' from shore, or just certain bays. The proposals came from some vocal minority lakeshore owners who thought their erosion problems were due to the wake boats. In reality, a lot of the erosion was due to their own poor management of the storm water from their land and removal of all the vegetation in grooming a beach. In a ratio of about 20:1 other lakeshore owners who live on the lake specifically so they can enjoy boating including wake sports showed up and by force of overwhelming public opposition, the proposal was voted down.
There is still some grumbling to try and pass some restrictions, but its probably unlikely.
