I think most sewing machines will do thicker material like the Sunbrella material...you just need the correct needle and some heavy duty thread (Hobby Lobby) that will stand up to elements if they are going to be exposed to UV or get wet. I bought a sewing machine kit from Amazon and taught myself some of the basics, its pretty easy to get something functional, the hard part is running straight lines and making perfect templates. After 1st one didnt fit like I wanted....I used pins to temp something together and then test fit it before I actually sewed it up (made some board rack covers for my boat to keep bugs off when towing).
I want to do some modifications to my bimini this winter, not sure if I will have the guts to do that myself tho since it would be an expensive screwup, so may take that project to the local upholstery shop.
