Need Help Pricing 1988 SN 2001

If this is against rules (the ones I read on the sticky didn’t say this was wrong) please let me know and I’ll delete.

We have a 1988 SN 2001 that will be a project boat for someone. Gel coat and finish are in really good shape. Interior has very minor tears and some discoloring in small spot on engine cover, but otherwise really good, not perfect (6+ out of 10). Floors are soft in front of engine cover by hw pylon, but engine mount bolts are solid in the stringers. Engine runs great, but is burning oil pretty bad. Or mechanic said as long as you keep oil in it, it’s fine but that three of the cylinders need to rings, etc to be 100%.

Trailer had an accident where the wheel came off and torqued the aluminum frame. No damage to boat and mechanic said he could get the trailer safe enough for transport, but I would list it as needing a trailer. I have a feeling the rear outside stringers are going or gone based on research.

The boat looks beautiful, but I don’t want to rip someone off and I don’t want to let it go for less than she’s worth. Based on the expertise in this forum, what would be a reasonable asking price? I was thinking $5-6k as is, and making buyer aware of all I listed above. Thoughts? And thank you in advance for any responses. also, we have the teak swim platform, just removed it to refinish.

So it looks good but the interior is not so good ,Engine is questionable ,trailer is bad and it probable needs the floor and stringers redone . 5-6 k would be closer if the boat was a 8to9 In the condition it is in now I would say 1000 to 1500 . How many hours are on it?

I'm at about the same value. Too bad, on the surface it looks nice in the pictures.

The boat is basically worth more in parts than in one piece. You have just too many major issues to overcome with the boat. Up here the asking price on a good solid example of this boat is between $7K and $8K and they're sitting. The wood stringers in these boats just put repair of a failed stringer system out of touch for a cost effective rebuild. Rotted stingers are the equivalent of a rusted frame on an old car. Not a lot of takers for that project and once you've done one all but the die hard fiberglass guys are never going to be looking to do another. Believe me I've been there.

These boats in project conditon like yours are easy to find up here and go for about $2K with a good trailer. I did a real quick search and came up with this one that's been listed for some time (notice the leaves on the trees) on craigslist.....

I'm willing to bet a grand cash when you go to look at it would take it.

Mcdees84, please do not take this as I am knocking your boat. It appears to be a great looking hull. Unfortunately the Southeast market will NOT bring anything close to 5-6K for that boat in that condition. My 86 that I just sold about 6 months back went for 6K. It was a solid boat with a new GT-40 top end/manifolds/risers, great floor and interior. Someone would have to put in a good 3-4k just to get the engine and trailer right before they even touched the floor. You are realistically in the 1500-2K range.

Great (well not great, but I appreciate the thorough and helpful responses). Thank you for all your input. I guess I’ll put it around $2,250 obo and let people talk me into the $1,500 range.

I sold my 87’ with 1,500 hrs on it that was a solid 8 condition wise for $8,500. I had 5 people interest and 3 lake tested. I had it listed for 9k and sold it to the guy I thought would take the best care of it. I’d say if your not in a hurry start high and work down. I’ve notice some market these boats to the wrong crowd. These hulls are hands down the best budget wakeboarding boat. Might target your younger crowd looking to get into their first boat for boarding.

Figured I would update the thread for those who responded and maybe anyone else who comes along with a similar question. We ended up getting $4,500 for her. We went and bought a used SN trailer ($1k). We let the buyer know about the soft floor and likely stringer issue. Also that the engine burned oil and to always check the oil every time you run it and to keep a quart on board at all times. He had a friend with an '83 SN with similar floor/stringer issue and they were going to work on their boats together. The engine does run terrific, just burns oil, but doesn't leak any. He was very happy and excited with the boat and I think he'll love her. She was very well cared for for the last 23 years and he should get plenty of years out of it.
