Towing with the Dodge 1500 Ecodiesel

Has anyone towed a G23 with the ecodiesel from Dodge? Says towing capacity of 12K. Love everything about the truck but would be selling an excursion with the 6.0 engine. Any input is helpful.

Can you do it yes on paper it has a max towing of 9860 lbs. That's assuming the best of conditions. I would not tow any thing bigger than a aluminum jon boat with less than a 3/4 ton . You can go for fuel savings or safe towing you can't get both . If it doesn't have 8 lugs its just a car with a bed.

You need to look mostly at the actual tongue weight of your boat, the payload capacity of the new rig minus gear weight you expect to carry, and the hitch-carrying capacity of the new rig. Those are most likely your limiting numbers (not tow rating) and I would personally not want to be over on either payload or hitch-carrying capacity (which can have as much to do with the weight you are taking off the front tires as it does the strength of the hitch). Remember both the weight of your hitch and tongue weight of your trailer go against both hitch carrying capacity and payload capacity.

I have an 2017 EcoDiesel 3.0L turbo - towing cap is 7,400 I believe...where are you getting the tow capacity?

There are a few times I have had to floor it up steeper hills towing my 2004 210, would never regularly tow a G behind it unless really short distance.

That was the justification to my wife for buying a 3/4 diesel that I wanted but did not need.

You will never unsafe with too big a tow vehicle too small will give you a white knuckle experience and a lot more costly breakdowns

Keep in mind they are trying to sell trucks . The ratings are the absolute max with perfect conditions not too hot not too cold flat or down hill, dry with no wind. They never mention the added wear on the truck . The bottom line any 1/2 ton truck is built for comfort and economy . Soft suspensions are comfortable but not well suited for hauling and towing. Small engines and 10 speed transmissions are great for gas mileage unless you load it up then you are only asking for breakdowns. Too much is never enough.

I have a 2016 Ecodiesel and it tows very well. I did upgrade to load range E tires over the factory P-rated tires. I tow G23's regularly with it, mainly back and forth to the boat ramp and around town, rarely more than 50 miles. I don't tow long distance but it handles a G23 great. Engine wise it is fantastic (actually better than our shop trucks - 2500 with a 6.0 gasser). Ideally a 3/4 ton truck would be preferable but I don't want to drive that daily... My truck is my daily driver (about 90 miles a day) and what we use for trips as with a bed cover it has way more space and more comfortable than my wife's car.
