I am looking at this boat for possible purchase.....what are peoples thoughts on it? Good year? Surf set up? Just some thoughts would be helpful. I know nothing about this year or the 220
Thanks
The elephant in the room is the interior layout. If you’re fine with that, the 220 is a good boat. It’s reliable. The drivetrain is the typical Excalibur setup. If they had other engine options, I’ve never seen them on the 220. 2007 has a LH prop which will help the regular side surf wave. 2006 is the only year with a RH prop. There’s a well established piggyback setup. With a surf gate it puts out a nice wave but in my opinion not as nice as the 230. Similar shape, not as tall or long. Wakeboarding wake is a little finicky. But overall it’s a nice boat that doesn’t have as good a surf wave as a 230 or as good a wakeboard wake as the 210. It can be had for a steal due to its unpopular interior layout. I almost ended up with a 220 myself but my wife put her foot down over it. She much preferred the 230 and was willing to pony up the extra for it.
I totally agree about the interior layout on the 220. I looked at a couple 220s early in my search for my first Nautique back in 2013, but quickly decided that I would much rather have a 210 or 230. Honestly, I can't for the life of me understand why people in the Nautique design dept ever thought that interior layout was a good idea.
I've never ridden behind a 220 but I've always heard that the wake is very finicky as someone said above.
The 220 seems to be a love it or hate it thing... There are def people that swear by it, but as mentioned above - the interior is a drawback to many. I also remember hearing the wakeboard wake can be very finicky. IMO find a 2008-9 230 SAN and you'll be happy.
Fair to know about interior preferences, similar to side-walkovers on 211&226. I feel like the 220 owners should band together to pump positive comments out to the world like Sanger owners do to bump their value.
We love the interior setup. Gives our kids a bit of divider, seat backs for watching riders. They had the right insights for those and the removable rear-to-mid-seat as newer bots and a simpler setup as drop-in/tilt-up seat backs. Admittedly we don’t use the side cooler much but the trash can is awesome, breadbox storage etc. Might look funky, but utility after spending a day in the boat is very cool. Compared to our X1, we love that there’s a place to put everything!
I have a 2007 220 team with the RZ6 engine and it is a great combination. My kids like having the separation from the adults and the storage is awesome. The surf wave has enough size and length to do 360's and other tricks. The wake board wake is adjustable to fit differant ride g styles. We really enjoy our 220.
Must be that love hate/thing. We love the interior layout - especially with kids. Trash can is a bonus! Tons of storage space, even with the lockers filled with ballast. With the Wakemakers piggyback and a suction wake shaper it's an easy surf wave setup. Can't comment if the wake is finicky for wake boarding, since we only surf and/or pull the kids on tubes.
We bought our 220 TE last summer. It’s a 2007 with the ZR6 in it. Found it with 250 hours on it. We upgraded from our 2003 216. Here’s the plus’s and minus’s about it having run it for almost a year:
Pluses: Storage is amazing. LIke take whatever you own and throw it in this boat. We put (2) sets of combo skis, a slalom ski, barefoot boom, 14 life jackets, three tubes, 3 wakeboards, 9 ropes, and more in it with nothing on the floor. Then we can put a surf board and knee board on the tower. My wife will tell you the trash can is one of the best parts, but she doesn’t like the wake for skiing. We like the seating, but keep in mind we are coming from a 216, so its a big change. They only made them for a limited number of years, so you can get them pretty reasonably if you can find one. I drove 900 miles for mine. Surf wake is great, our kids love it. We have an over tower Bimini, highly recommend that. You can easily walk under it. The ZR6 is huge, lots of hole shot and power. But its a thirsty little bastard with gas.
Minus’s: It’s a heavy boat. When you fill all the ballast and fill it full of kids to surf, it handles like a greyhound bus. Get the upgraded prop from ACME, its worth it. The transom is really high, so its hard to see ropes and skiers on the back. My wife or I have wrapped three ropes on the prop in the past 6 months because we just didn’t know they were there. I’ve owned nautiques for 20 years and have never wrapped a rope prior to this. Back seatS are going to need reupholstered, they have a history of cracking.
Would I buy one again? I would. We really like it. It’s taken a lot of getting used too as its a lot bigger than our 216. It’s a 2 family boat now. We have 3 kids. Ideally I would have liked a used GS22 or 24, but they are just too high in price. They haven’t been out long enough now to come down more.
we got the 220 after our 2005 210 because they change the hull for 2006 and thought it was great interior design compared with the 210 our only negative was the sensitivity of the wake board wake
