Looking to Upgrade: Thoughts on GS22 vs MasterCraft X22?

    Gents,

I’m new to the Natique forum and looking for some collective wisdom from the crowd here .... We bought our Moomba LSV new as our first surf boat back in 2014 when we bought our lake home up in Northern Wisconsin (Eagle River area), and it’s been a great family boat. With three boys and a wife who loves the boat, we surf and ski as a family, and occasionally do some tubing when we have friends up. It’s been a great cocktail cruiser as well, so it’s served us well over the last 6 years. We keep the boat on a covered lift from Memorial Day though October-ish, and we service and store it indoors at the dealer for winter. We also have a 1936 Chris Craft 19’ Runabout as our slow cruiser, so the surf boat gets a bit of a rest now and then.

However, with our twin boys now graduated from college and working far away, they are only getting up to the lake once a year, leaving the bulk of our time at the lake with my wife, our youngest son (a Junior in high school), and me. Since we love to surf, we’ve had to upgrade all our bags and still fill 2 additional 650’s with a Tsunami pump under the surf side rear seats. Even then, with only 3 in the boat the wave is mediocre at best and it’s frankly a pain with the extra bags. And since we also ski, lead isn’t an option. The bottom line is that with 300 hours on our LSV, getting tired of constantly filling and emptying the extra bags for just a mediocre wave, the lack of technology on a 6-year old boat, and getting tired of the entry-level trim on our Moomba, I’m looking to upgrade our boat and drop some coin doing it.

We’ve only got 2 inboard dealerships in the area, one who only sell MasterCraft and the other who only sells Natiques. I want to stick with a 21’-22’ boat and I want an easy/efficient ballast system that will produce a great wave, but I want to be able to ski as well as we’re not wake boarders. The fit & finish of the Moomba lineup is subpar, and that’s also important for our next boat.

So here’s my question for you guys: Faced with considering moving to either a new GS22 or a new X22, what are your thoughts? I have no experience with either boat and I plan to demo both this summer, but I’m doing my due diligence now and would really appreciate anyone’s experience who has surfed and skied behind both boats. I’m also interested in what you guys have experienced with Master Craft and Natique from from a quality and service perspective. Thanks for any help and guidance on this, and I’m looking forward to any help you can provide.

I moved last year from 2014 Mastercraft X2 to a 2019 GS22. My family and I have loved the boat and been trouble free. It surfs well and the ski wake is very respectful for the size and weight. There is a bump when you come across but is not too hard. The X2 had a smaller wake while skiing but it was like hitting a concrete curb. For 2020, Nautique made some modifications to the hull and increased the size of nss that improved the surf wave on GS22.

As far as comparing it to a X22, they are very different boats. X22 is one of Mastercraft’s flagship surf boats and the GS is a crossover. The Mastercraft XT22 would be a more apple to apple comparison. The X22 is going to produce a better surf wake hands down and is a much deeper boat with bigger ballast.

Quality: Can’t go wrong with either brand. My Mastercraft was great and the Nautique has been fantastic thus far.
Service: This all depends on the dealer. They can make or break the experience.

In 2019, we shopped the GS22 against the XT22. We went Nautique for a several reason: very little bow (we are vertically challenged and hated the bow rise in our X2), preferred the Nautique helm much better, JL vs Klipsch, ski wake and the boat just felt more solid.

Pretty much echo what Coreyp said. Spot on.

The X22 is specifically a surf and wakeboard boat. While you can certainly free ski behind it, it will have a big hard bump to cross. Surf wave and wakeboard wake are fantastic on the X22.

The XT22 is more in line with the GS22. Both have their advantages and disadvantages to the other. A demo is going to tell you everything you need to know. You may as well just take them both out, and buy on two overall criteria...…. 1) Which dealer did you feel the best about, and how responsive/courteous/helpful were they. 2) Which boat did you like better overall. You cant lose either way with those two boats.

One thing to keep in mind- No matter if its the GS, or the XT, free skiing behind one of these newer crossovers requires a decent ski speed to have a decent ski wake. If you ski at 28, they will all have a nasty bump. Get used to skiing at 34, and they flatten out pretty nicely. Its just hard to hide the weight of either boat, even though they are marketed as crossover boats.

The fit and finish of the GS is head and shoulders above the XT

Thanks Gents .... After a bunch of research and input from a broad array of folks who are a lot smarter than me, I have officially eliminated MC and am only looking at 2020 GS22’s. The XT22 just doesn’t match up with the GS22, and the fit and finish of the Natique just blows away MasterCraft. Thanks for all the great input, and I’ll keep everyone updated as my search progresses.

Now for the fun part of finding the right boat with the right options at the right dealer at the right price

If your dealer has any open slots you could order the boat you want and maybe get a 2021 in mid July. Just a thought.

Well, that was fast ... I just closed a deal for a 2020 GS22 in Admiral Blue Metal Flake with Mojave Brown and Admiral Blue interior . This thing is a beast, and I got a terrific deal done with Ryan at WaterCraft Sales in Three Lakes, WI. He was super flexible on my needs, gave me a great trade in value for our 2014 Moomba LSV, and did what it took to win my business. We will be servicing and storing our new GS with them every winter, so this long term relationship is on to a strong start!

Thanks for everyone’s help on this thread and all the others that I have pored over for the past months, and I look forward to getting fully up to speed on this beast once we take delivery in two weeks. I’m thrilled to be joining the Natique family, and here are a few pics of our new ride

I'm not usually a fan of the brown interiors but it looks really good the way it was done with the other colors! and I will admit, I am biased on the Blue/Black hull

I hear ‘ya, I never liked brown interiors myself until I saw this particular color combo, but I really like how this all works together ..... We’re super-psyched to pick this beast up in 10 days and can’t wait to get on what I hope to be a monster surf wave
