Looking at the 2021 G23 but worried about wave length, and height for beginners.

Hey guys I have been looking at purchasing a new boat next year and am looking at the specifics of quite a few. This will be a wakesurfing only boat so really i am only concerned with that.

I would REALLY like to buy a Nautique (specifically the new 2021 G23 model just released) but I am worried about the wave length and being able to tone the wave down for kids. It seems like Nautique has the best wave possible but thats it. That it cannot be toned down for kids or beginners to enjoy. It also seems that it has a noticeably short surf-able wave compared to other models like the Supra or LSV.

I love Nautiques warranty and how reliable the boat is so I would REALLY like to invest in this boat rather then others, but it seems to be only for experts and that is just not fair to my family.

I was just hoping to get some insight into this if possible please!

    Thanks so much guys

Let me offer a counter point to your post. My family has been wake surfing for six years. We compete regularly and have two world championships in our family. We surf nearly every boat on the market either at competitions, when training in another state, in boat demos, or when giving surf lessons on others boats. We could buy any boat but choose Nautique. My daughter started surfing when she was 11. I have trained kids as young as 5 on our Nautique. The wave can easily be toned down for kids, very young kids. Set Ballast at 50-70%, NSS at 0, NCRS at 0 and the wave is as mellow as any boat on the market. Furthermore, kids learn very fast and want to be challenged as they grow. Buying a boat with a weak wave will result in disappointment as the kids progress. This will not happen with a Nautique and certainly not on the new G23.

Regarding the length of the wave. In my opinion boats with a tab system (one that is mounted on the transom parallel to the bottom of the hull) provide a great wave, but one that looks longer yet in practice does not have the same usable area found on a G wave. Tab systems (on Supra, Centurion, Supreme, etc) set the wave up further back because they list the hull by inducing pressure on the water just behind the boat transom. The water is depressed by hull on the opposite side of the tab creating a depression area where the surf board will get sucked into that depression causing the rider to fall. With a tab system one cannot surf up to the transom. With these systems one MUST always surf 3 to 4 feet back from the transom. On a Nautique or Malibu (with a side mounted plate system) the wave is clean and surf-able right up to the platform.

Finally, when set up properly the G wave has usable length as long as any boat on the market.

See this post below for a picture of our 2020 G23 wave. Our 2021 G23 will be delivered this weekend...
    All the best.

Yep....what Greg said. You won't believe how fast you will be "Toning it UP for the kids....not down" Buy the best and don't look back. Sleep good at night with a G23 in your garage...not wanting a G23 in your garage.

So well said! Surfers with a G23 don't ever wish they had another boat...except for perhaps another G23 or Paragon!

I’m a new g23 owner and had similar questions and concerns. My kids are 9 and 12 and have never done any water sports except tubing. We looked at centurion s and mc’s and nautique. I really wanted to like the centurion (price) but the interior quality is far, far below Mc and nautique imo. We went with the 2020 g23 and both kids are wakeboarding after two days on the water and 12 year old is surfing. They progress quickly. I firmly believe there is a reason nautiques cost what they do...they are the cream of the crop and you would not ever wish for another brand imo. Good luck!

i have been able to surf behind and see the adjustability on the Paragon hull and i own a 2020 g23 i also have a 10 year old daughter who is just learning how to surf. The 2016-2020 G23 hull is very difficult to "tone down" and still have a CLEAN wave, especially at a lower speed like 10.5 for kids. That seems to be the slowest we can go. i run the ballast at 40% and nss at 0 ncrs at 3-5. That said once they figure it out they likely wont want the toned down wave anymore like my 12 year old nephew who wants the big boys wave now haha

Having said that you will be super happy that what i saw on the Paragon hull is a WAY more adjustable wave!! so this will be the case on the 2021 G23 as well. you can set the surf system to 1 and the wave mellows right out, and with the little kids there's still plenty of push for them. Its also way less intimidating than having a steep curler to look at.
The big difference in the paragon hull is that the wave is actually adjustable where at all settings the wave is clean and surfable.

This was absolutely great info everybody. Pretty much seals the deal for me and I really think its worth it for the extra investment into a Nautique.

Thank you so much for that.

Steven - The only other thing I would mention to this thread, your dealer will help you out a ton, or at least they should, get to know them. I texted my dealer on weekends for the first several times out with what now seem like dumb questions, but they were great at telling me exactly what to do. I came from an Chaparral I/O.

Personal Note... I was leaning toward a Nautique myself after seeing one, but my wife is very practical, and I was afraid she wouldn't go for the additional expense of the Nautique over the other boats. So, I took her to the boat show, she agreed that it was hard to describe, but the Nautique is the better boat for a family than most of the alternatives. I would say that MC is 2nd in that regards. Malibu/Axis and Centurion/Supreme are next. At the end of the day, you are never going to regret the Nautique, even the guys that bounce over to MC or Malibu from Nautique may like their boats better, but still admit the Nautique is a great boat.

Steven, I will also validate what Greg has stated. My kids are 10, 15, 16, 25 and 31. We got out of the sand dune/off road business to take on water sports so that the entire family could enjoy our time together. I bought a 2020 G23 for the same reasons as you mentioned above (warranty, reliability and American made). This was my first boat that I have ever owned and I hope to upgrade every other year with the latest and greatest G series. With all that said, each of my kids were up and surfing by the end of our first day. You will not be disappointed!

Steven, I am in the same position that you were in last July when you posted this message. Since you are in Alberta, I am assuming that you have not yet had the opportunity to get your Nautique in the water. If you have, though, I am just wondering if your experience lines up with the (excellent and thorough) advice here. Thanks

New to the discussion, but our 9 year old has surfed our G23 a handful of times... and she is already asking for it to be a bigger wave. All of original statements above are true for sure... we have been in the other boats - we use it mainly for surfing - and there is no other boat I would rather be in. Our 6 year old daughter will surf it as well.
