2021 G23 Engine Option Question

Hello All,
I am ordering a 2021 G23 right now and have about a week left to make changes. I'm excited! It will be a big hull upgrade from my 2015 G23!

Question is this - What engine do you like for this boat? The standard ZZ6? Or should I upgrade it? I wish I could ride in one, but my dealer does not have one in stock.
I have the standard engine in my 2015 G23 and am happy with it.

Based on what I read the ZZ6 is the latest technology engine (direct injection) and is standard in this boat. 450 HP and 465 torque.

The ZR7 is 25 more HP and 35 more torque but is $10k +- more. Is it worth it? What I read said it is based on the older engine (I think the one that is in my boat now)

The ZZ8 is what comes in the Paragon, likely because it is heavier. it is a lot more $$$, do not think I need this.

What do you all think? Thanks in advance for the help.

I have the ZR7 in my 2020 G23 this year, and it is great power, but it does use more gas since it is not DI.

Certain documents for that engine list it as 500 HP. Not sure which is accurate.

Jeff....what do you decide engine wise in the new PN G23? I think I'm going with the ZZ6. Just curious if you made the call yet.

First define your use and needs. Then select an engine. Are you at altitude? Wakeboard with full/extra ballast? Very large crew? Surf mostly?

ZZ8 if you can make it happen and don't mind the fuel consumption. Have the XR7 in my G23 and it has been amazing - gives you a lot of flexibility with loading, re-propping, using at altitude if needed, etc. There is a reason Nautique outfits their pro rider boats with the supercharged engines, even at Florida elevations.

The ZZ6 was always great in my previous G boats. Not sure how it will be in the 2021+ G boats. It'll probably be fine.

The ZZ6 performs fine with 900lbs of ballast in the 2021 G. Felt just as strong in the 2021 as in my 2020 and earlier Gs. It would be my first choice for surfing at sea level.

Thanks for the response - I am in Dallas, TX area so elevation is not an issue. 500 ft +- elevation. I wakeboard with full stock ballast (100% port and 75% starboard and 150 lbs of lead) and typically have 4 people in the boat. Sometimes 8 people.
Surfing we add another 400 lbs or so to port side and fill the starboard up 100%.

My current boat is a 2015 G23 with the ZR 450 and I am happy with the performance. If the new ZZ6 will match this performance, I will be happy and do not need to upgrade.

Yep....South Texas here...so I'm gonna go with Greg's advice. Never any extra weight...low elevation....small crew most of the time..ZZ6 should do the trick for me.

Yes, I believe greggmck was referring to 900 pounds of lead in addition to full stock ballast.

Unless my elementary math skills are failing me, the 2021 G23 with full stock ballast is actually 550 pounds lighter than the 2020 G23 with full stock ballast. If that's the case, it seems like the ZZ6 would be more effective in the new boat than the old one (without consideration of changes in drag related to the new hull and any added weight). It also seems like that would possibly result in a softer wakesurf wave (albeit a different shaped wave).

Am I missing something here?

(BTW, walked through the new G for the first time a few days ago - really really liked it.)
