211 port side blower vent takes in water when surfing

When we surf with the 211 it takes in water in the port side blower vent. I know we use more weight than recommended, but it is not an unrealistic amount. You would think when designing and testing the boat CC would test it beyond the maximum recommended thresholds to see what will happen. This is actually a safety issue because when the water comes in it rips the blower tube and fills the boat with water. If the blige is not on it could cause other damage due to water. The blower will then no longer work so there is now a gas fume issue until the tube is fixed.

There are a few ways around this i can think of; 1) less weight so it doesnt submerge or get splashed, 2) put duct tape over the vent, 3) surf on starboard side, 4) create a new vent cover that displaces water more efficiently. If anybody has created #4 let me know and i will buy one from you.

We like to surf on the port side and we like the extra weight, so currently we let the water come in and keep the bilge on. Of course our blower tube is thrashed. If CC knew about this they might re-think that port side blower vent. They could make the vent so when water splashed it that it didnt go straight in through the cheese grate holes. if the vent had some rear facing louvers it would displace the water better. They could also put the vents in the rear. I had the same problem surfing behind the 210 and we used to stuff a towel in the vent.

Get a rubber plug and stick it in the hole when you surf. Or maybe some colored duc tape, you know that fixes anything

jonfo, we duct tape over the vent on the side we are surfing on. Port or starboard vent can take in water. Keep in mind that we are using the boat in a manner the manufacturer can not recommend. When you put that much weight in a specific area that causes a specific corner of the boat to sit much lower than designed then we as owners should adapt. I always carry duct tape for this. I do have to clean off the area with a solvent type cleaner occasionally, put I am not much of a neat freak about a liitle tape residue.

jonfo, just reread my post. Please don't think I was being sarcastic about the proper use of the boat comment. It reads worse than it types.

We definitely are not adhering to the recommended useage of these boats. How about a rubber stopper or even a cork of the correct size ? Less of a hassle than duct tape and no cleanup afterwards. I have not noticed any water coming in mine, but I do take a ton through the back of my engine cover, so not sure I would notice.

Club Mike and I have surfed behind his 211. He keeps a roll of 3M Blue tape in the boat and tapes over the vent when setting up to surf. He may have more insight to what works and what doesn't

port side - duct tape over the rear grill and run the ballast..

starboard - duct tape over the rear grill and a extra bilge in the engine compartment with a hose coming inbetween the rear cushions to drain ...the factory rear bilge is on the port side so it wont drain when the boat is setup goofy..i am going to adding a extra rule bilge on the starboard side and T it in to the exsisting system..

to clean the tape residue off just a little goof off.
