Thinking of Trading in 2020 G23 on a 2021 G23, X24 or Xstar

Full disclosure, I posted a similar discussion on Team Talk Mastercraft and am simply looking for genuine input.

I currently own a 2020 Super Air Nautique G23. First let me start by saying that I love this boat. Fit and finish inside and out are excellent. The wakeboard wake is amazing and the wakesurf wake has tons of push. My dealer support is excellent and to this point the only thing that has frustrated me is the trailer (but that's different and pointless story lol). The only gripe I really have about the boat to be honest is the ability to customize the wakesurf wave. I had always been a wakeboard first guy but as I've gotten older, I find that wakesurfing is far more forgiving on my body and have really gotten into the sport. I have heard the X24 and Xstar wakesurf waves are quite similar. I was wondering if anyone on here had ridden behind these boats and if so how did they compare to each other and the G. I prefer the storage on the G23 and star (rear lockers are a big deal especially for storing my kid's massive tube) and this is something that can't be matched in regards to the G23. I am also looking into the 2021 G23, considering they've went to the Paragon Hull and changed the NSS (from what I understand), so now it's far more customizable. Either way, I was just curious what people's thoughts are? I got a good deal on my 2020 so I wouldn't be taking much of a bath if I decided to make a change. Right now I just want to see if it would even make sense?

I just added 800lbs of lead, primarily distributing the weight in the mid to front portion of the boat, trying to increase the surface area and lengthen the wave (lead placement was based primarily on recommendations I found on this site and I will be trying it out today). I can't actually believe I'm even complaining about this. The push on the G23 wave is incredible. I also love that it feels very firm. I just rode behind a 2020 Supra and it was a good wave but felt a little soft and the engine noise was pretty bad.

Someone has to have some insight? I will say the lead made all the difference in the world today. It was by far the most tuned in I've had the surf wave since buying the boat. It just sucks that I'm stuck with the lead on the boat all day; but there is no denying it made a significant difference.

I had similar questions earlier this year when I was looking to buy. I looked at an x star, x24, g23, and briefly a Makai.

I really liked the master craft interior and their cool touch fabric. Did like the dual screen and it seemed more adjustable than the g23. More bow rise on the Mc. Did not like the cooler location or the rear lounge seats in the x star. Did not like the towers at all on the MC. I’m 6’1” and would of had to duck every time to not hit the speakers. Speaking of, I can’t stand klipsch, and wasn’t at all impressed with the system.

G23 - liked the cooler and power tower and stereo better. Really really like the transom walk through. Not sure why all boats don’t do that?? We chose the g23 and now the 21 models made a lot of improvements. Bigger nss plates, better software to combine the nss and ncrs settings. More square front end. The wave is big and steep but seems like it can be longer (on mine). I ordered 500lbs Of lead and will try it out this weekend. I’m hoping to be able to lengthen it a bit and get more power

I went out yesterday for the first time with 800 pounds of lead and it made a world of difference! We had two other adults with us that have been struggling to drop the rope and stay in the wave and not only did they drop the rope, they went for several minutes and were able to work toward the back of the wave and back up again. Between them and my wife, who is a pretty good surfer, they were all blown away by the difference that not only the weight but really the placement of the weight made to the ride. I noticed with the lead placement toward the mid and bow portion of the boat the wave length was considerably longer, which frankly made it more fun to ride. I was very pleased! Just wish I could empty the lead out of the boat similar to my ballast.

Glad to hear that. I am going to place my 500lbs how gregmck showed on his pictures (mid and bow only with about 200lbs more on the port side). It is doubtful I will be taking lead bags in and out of the boat, so the kids wakeboarding with it will just have to get used to it. I guess I will have to as well

I have a friend that had to add lead in his Mastercraft . I would think after paying 100-200k you wouldn't have to add anything but people?

I wish that were the case. Though as I’ve learned, if nothing else you add lead to manage things such as prop wash. I’ve added up to 800lbs to my 2020 G23, though I take some out if I’m going to have a big crew just to make sure I don’t overweight the boat. I always keep a little onboard however to manage prop wash. Most of mine is placed in the mid to bow region to lengthen the wave and it definitely works. What kind of Mastercraft do they own and how much are they running?

I have a 2021 G23 and I can tell you the stock wave is waaay longer that then the 2019 I had. They say the dry weight only went up 100 pounds but they pulled out 650 pounds of ballast. The boat has 10 settings now for surfing but we find that the best setup for our style is 7 or 8. We normally dont have a big crew out with us so I am going to play around with some ballast bags this weekend and see what happens. I surf goofy and with just the stock settings its pretty unreal, hard to tell yourself to go further back in the wave as we are used to the small pocket we had on our 18 and 19. The rear lockers are considerably smaller though, one of the things I dont like as we usually keep 5-6 surf boards in there along with anchor and what not. The have a ballast hose running up out of the floor right where you would use the small hallway, as I would call it, to put the longer surf boards in, so that sucks. The rear transom seats are awesome but they also rob some space from the lockers, so if lockers are that important to you I would for sure go see and maybe take some gear to see how they work for you. The new ZZ6 is quite a bit louder in the cabin when running full out, my 19 was way quieter so Im not sure how it became this much louder, other than those little things it really is a great upgrade from the previous hulls, in my opinion of course.

It seems to be a process dialing in the wave. I would say two seasons is what it took but maybe if you are already familiar with these boats it would be one season. My opinion would be to stick with what you got and always try to make it better or improve. Boat prices with covid gives you the rare opportunity to upgrade without too big a hit and with the paragon hull improvement I would be really tempted to upgrade. Truly a first world problem you have with this decision

Who are "they"?

Can anyone verify the real weight of a 2021 G23 and the difference in the full ballast from a Gen 2 (2016)?

Johnny...the way I read it...."They" is Nautique....or to cover it more....what the printed weight of the ballast capacity is and the printed weight of the boat.

Yes correct, "they" are in fact Nautique. The dry weight according to the website is 6000, previous gens were 5900. The ballast capacity on the 2021 is 2200 when the previous gens were 2850 or 2950.
