How do I remove the Ski post tie off on a 1985 Ski Natique

I am trying to remove the ski pole tie-off on my ski natique so I can install a tall pole for wake boarking. It looks like there are two pins in the post holding the tie-off but I can't figure out what tool and how to remove the pins.

I think you have to drill the pins out.

Watch out because even with the pins out the top might not come out. I know a guy that lifted his boat off the trailer trying to get it out, and that was after drilling out the pins, and using a heating torch.

I've read about folks who knocked the pin out the pin with a punch. Otherwise, you need to drill out the pin as suggested. Soak it with penetrating oil. You can use a pry bar to twist it out. Some, shall we say, less energetic folks cut them off with a hacksaw. I wouldn't recommend cutting it off. I think it detracts from the resale value amongst people who value these classic boats. If you remove the ring properly, you can always put it back if/when you sell. At minimum, you can sell the ring. Lot's of people looking for original rings. BKH

A dealer told me what bkh said... Soak it with the penetrating oil and then use a punch to pop those out. Be careful when you (if you) use the pry bar to not bend the metal.

Get some stuff called PB Blaster, stinks like you won't believe, but it works.

Spray some on the pins, then take a small hammer and just tap the ring repeatedly. Repeat for 2-3 days and I will bet those pins will come out fairly easily.

Did this with a 65 ford and did not break a bolt.

You may even want to consider a Flite Pipe extended pylon, it mounts to the factory pylon, not over it, so you do not have to remove the ring and finger. The only issue with the Flite Pipe was the first ones manufactured had the mounts a little too short so you had to turn the pipe, basically mount it at 11:00 or 1:00 O'Clock looking down, to clear the finger, the 2nd generation had longer clamps and solved that problem. It was a great product, I bought one for my 1980 SN, it was solid and had no rattle whatsoever.

i was able to pop mine out with a punch with no problems at all. all that holds the ring on are two roll pins. a couple of sharp taps with a punch and they should pop right out. then the ring should lift off. i'm sure if ur boat has seen salt water at all that they will be a little tougher, but other than that they should be fairly easy. i would not recommend drilling, because if ur not careful, u could distort the hole and the factory size roll pin wouldn't stay in place. (just incase u ever need the ring back on)

Same here on both of our 1986 Ski Nautiques. The key is the punch. Pop the 2 pins out with a punch (we tried screwdrivers but you are going to really need a punch to do the job properly), and then see if the ring comes out. If it does not, wrap a facecloth around the end of a prybar, and see if you can spin the ring loose, and then up & out. One of ours came out easily this way.

One did not. On the one that did not, we tried everything, with some very strong people trying to spin and lift it out. Finally, we had to pull the boat out of the water, tow it to a friend's house who had a hoist in his garage. For a breif moment, the boat was lifted off the trailer, by the pylon, until it finally released. I did not see this event with my own eyes, but my best friend claims that it happened. So we were 50/50 on getting that tow eye out easily.

And - don't throw the tow eye out. Once you decide to get a tower, you will be reinstalling that thing.

                      Buy a tower.
Brings back space in your boat.
                      Invesments return, poles dont
