Help me understand the appeal of brown/tan interiors?

There seems to be a proliferation of dealers ordering boats with brown/tan interiors. I realize everything about color choice comes down to preference but for the life of me this is something I can’t wrap my head around? A little brown/tan here and there can look okay/nice. I understand it may be easier to clean or not show as much dirt? Tan/brown SeaDek holds its color over time (though if I don’t like the color I’m not sure that matters lol). I’ve ended up custom ordering my last two boats because there was a simple shortage of boats at dealerships that weren’t all bile brown on the inside. However, as I watched the boat market flourish many of these same boats have remained for sale. Thus, I waited to see what they did with the 2021’s and many of the same dealers, that still have the 2020’s with brown interiors have ordered 2021’s with either the same color scheme or in some cases even more brown?! Can’t tell you how many times I looked at the outside of a boat and thought, “wow that’s beautiful,” only to look at the interior and think “what the heck were they thinking?” Maybe I’m missing something? Does a brown interior throw a better wave? Maybe it’s more aerodynamic? Not sure? This isn’t unique to Nautique by any means, as it’s definitely industry wide.

Exactly!!! Awesome new 2021 G23....love the colors....wait....why did you put BROWN interior and Brown SeaDek in a Steel Blue hulled boat????? Brown with Black...Doberman colors...I can see...but Brown with Blue.....I'm not understanding it either. Now....the lighter Brown does look a bit better..but still........

I think it's a status thing. Yeah it's ugly, but you (I, in this case) cannot afford a boat with a brown interior, so nah nah nah boo boo. Much like the ugly, flat black Escalades and Range Rovers. I feel like it's a "look at me" thing. No offense to anyone that has one, it's just not my thing. I'll take my red and white '07 interior.

Guess it would work well on the chattahoochee river where I ski.. gets quite brown sometimes! me personally - no way on a six plus figure boat!

Agree with the OP. I don't understand it either. I think they will have the resale hit like a yellow sports car.

It’s a popular color scheme these days. I like it when it’s done well. Personally, I think it’s a fad and will age poorly. Brown interiors were popular in the late 70s - early 80s and those boats suddenly looked very very old in the 90s. I guess we’ll see but i do t see it slowing down any times soon. The good ness is I don’t need all the boats. I just need one. So there’s plenty of room for people to have all the brown they want.

There are a few well done boats that I like the brown on, most I do not understand. My old Wakesetter had a tan interior that looked good at first but looked dated really quickly. My 210 isnt much newer but white and gray aged much better.

Yup I think brown interiors will be in the same vein of purple & teal boats of the early 90's, tribal tattoo of the 00's etc.

Doesn't mean it doesn't look good. Just will show it's vintage at the glance of an eye.

Personally I like a neutral interior with flash of colors in the panels and contrast stitching (which maybe will be dated as well).

I demo'd a 2021 P23 today and it had grey non-skid and white interior, when we tried the G23 it had the Mojave brown non-skid and seats and we liked it... but there was a P23 today that we saw with the Sahara non-skid and it shows marks way too easily. Made up my mind and I'll be going with grey/white for the interior on a P23 as I really liked the dark grey floors. Also absolutely LOVE the Admiral Blue Flake, man that really pops on the water and in the sun! Hopefully we secure our build slot early next week once we finalize the colors.

I am surprised by the responses in this thread. I once commented on this very thing (I thought it was here, but must have been on another boat forum I frequent), and I was told by several that brown interior is here to stay and that I am weird for not being in love with peanut butter colored interiors. I agree that there will be a day when we say...'remember when everyone wanted the inside of the boat to be brown'. Purple and teal of the 90's for sure.

I do not like the brown interior most of the time. Sometimes it complements the boat very well, but it is usually trying too hard to look like the inside of a Ferrari. I also am pretty sure it will get hot.

Looking like the inside of a Ferrari is a bad thing? I’m sure the red and yellow and greens are here to stay though....Colours come and go but would argue white, brown, grey and black are neutral enough to have more staying power. Dealers are not dumb and will order what is selling. For every one person that is not fond of my “**** brown” interior 9 people love it. I’ll Take those odds and am sure the dealers will as well.

All fads fade. The 90's saw the Miami Vice teal, pink and neon colors come and go. Same with the brown and golds that were mixed in there somewhere. Classic colors tend to transcend the fads without a problem. That said the only one that needs to be happy with whatever boat or color you choose is you. Life is short, buy what makes you happy and who cares about the rest. If you lose a couple grand over a fad color it's really no big deal.

As for me, like others are saying, some boats pull off the colors well and some don't. Personally I'll stick with the classic colors and schemes but for the right price I can be converted.

I personally love the brown interiors. They are easy to keep clean and look great with black accents.
