Driving a G23

Our 2021 G23 came yesterday (photos in "show us your Nautiques") and I have some questions. As some have commented, the G23 drives like a "bathtub" as compared to the 230 we came out of. I'd love to hear people's best practices for the most efficient throttle usage/trajectory to get the surf rope back to a rider. I found the turning radius ridiculously large and the for the first couple of hours kept misjudging the likely path. I have steering assist, but either it isn't working correctly - or the tide was overpowering it's ability to move the stern.

Lastly, the stock surf wave was clean and huge (4 people, full ballast) - but shorter than our 230. All guidance welcomed on how to increase the length a bit. (I have read many of the threads on surf set-up, but they are mostly for the legacy hull.) Thanks!

Turn opposite the wave when you cut the throttle. The wave will push the boat around and you can head back to the rider and you will miss the rollers as well.

Yup do this and you won’t even need steering assist.

First, I never go above idle after coming off plane which helps avoid waves over the bow. After turning around I generally head straight at the fallen surfer until about 25 yards away. Then full left or right rudder while in idle for about a 30 degree heading change and then to neutral or a couple seconds of reverse. This puts the platform right in front of the fallen surfer (no stern thruster). They may need to swim for the rope, but it seems to work well.

In regards to your wave, a very general rule of thumb is the more weight in the back provides a steep and short wave. More weight in the front gives a longer and less steep wave. Adjust a couple hundred pounds of lead or people to get the wave you want (lead is more reliable than people).

In a G25, putting weight up front did nothing for my wave. I am loaded up in the middle of the boat, and towards the back, but not all the way to the back. I am not sure about the 230, but my 21 model G25 drives a **** of a lot better then the 19 I had. I can tell when I come to a stop, there is a ton more push in the 21, which makes it harder to turn around. I have a stern thruster, and it really doesnt do anything for me.

Current 230 (08 model), my experience driving the G's are not the '21 & newer models. The G boats just drive very "sluggishly", steering input, around the dock etc..You'll get used to it, it's still better than a sterndrive!

That was my setup I rode once then ordered a paragon. My friend brought the bags. I wanted that wake/wave without having all my storage taken up.

This is exactly what I do when Driving any G Series! Works great and is really efficient and fast, Especially if you always have someone ready to throw the rope!

I love that term "Rope Monkey". Although some may say it might offend others or that it is not politically correct, It would make a great t-shirt and hat design from Nautique to be worn when you are the Rope Monkey.

Until you need to actually be able to steer going in reverse. Then that sterndrive is looking pretty good...

My 230 steers in reverse, one way, but it steers!

we like Rope B!+(# as our term and work hard to keep a couple on board at all times....
