Serial Number information

Can someone tell me how to decifer the serial number

A friend was showing me how the serial number shows the modle the date it was made ect.

Here is the explanation of the Hull Identification number from a 2001 Owner's manual.

"The hull identification number is a requirement of the U.S. Coast Guard for boat manufacturers. It is a standardized numbering system that assigns a specific sequence of numbers and letters to a specific boat. This number is molded into the hull. You will find it on the right-hand side of the transom just below the rubrail. Write this number down in your records and keep it in a safe place away from the boat.

Here is a brief explanation to help you understand the hull number:

The first three digits represent Correct Craft, Inc. (CTC). The next five digits are the boat's serial number. The following digit is a letter from "A" through "L" designating the month the boat was made.

There are three remaining numbers. The first of these represent the last digit of the year the boat was built. The final two numbers state the MODEL year. A boat built in August of 2000 is actually a 2001 model boat."

Y = Model year

M = Model (can't remember exactly)
2 = Ski
3 = SNOB
4 = SPORT
7 = SS
8 = 226
? = 211
? = 220
? = 236

XXX = Hull number (can't remember if it's 3 or 4)

A = Month it was made

XX = Year Made

Chris, I dont believe thats entirely correct. IIRC my '90 was built in late '89 and the last 2 digits on the HIN are 90.

CTC is for the boat manufacturer. The next two numbers are the model code (196, 206, etc) the next three tells you what number the boat is(how many of that model was made so if yours is 050, your boat is the 50th of that model made for that year). The letter that shows up is the month the boat was built. A is January, B is February, etc. The next number tells you what year the boat was made in and the last two designate the actual model year.

What if the model year is designated as "0"? Is that a Standard or Scrappy?

Based on HIN's of boats I have, I can confirm that "4" is correct model for Sport and "0" is for closed bow Ski. I have added 4 back above.

Why would the 4th digit be model year, when there's already build date AND model year at the end?

That said, mine is consistent with that - 2003 SAN, HIN starts with CTC37...

I agree, seems silly, but 3 HINs of different years match up with it as well.
