Dock Electrocution

I just saw an ad for this product and after hearing 2 stories of this over the last 20 years and seeing poorly maintained corrosive salt environment lifts get eaten up, I think this product is something that makes sense. Not sure if there is a in-panel breaker solution so all you electrical experts please comment.

Sounds like an expensive Ground fault circuit. In Minnesota I believe Elect. Code requires Outdoor power to be "WORKING" ground fault. I test all of my GFI circuits often.
I was in the water with 3 other guys carring an Aluminum boat lift out of the water. No one had unpluggged the winch and the cord was cut thru where wrapped around the frame. All 4 of us in rubber waders felt the shock and dropped the lift. Just a quick snap as the GFI did its job and tripped. We were lucky.
A week later just a couple of miles from me someone died pulling his dock when cord dropped in the water and was not GFI protected.

I am running all new power to my dock for my new boat lift, and a side benefit is the upgrade to full GFI protection for the entire new dock panel. My existing wiring is junk, and only one outlet is GFI.

Guess that means that you won't be hanging out at my dock this Summer as I did all the wiring myself?

Jeff when I ran power to the new dock I did it to the ACOE requirements. The Breaker at the panel must be GFCI which are expensive suckers (luckily the Breaker panel already had one installed) and each outlet has to be a weather rated GFCI and encased in a weatherproof box. All wiring must be encased in conduitand every oulet grounded. ( we know some just avoid that green wire) All of it makes sense if you think about it. I ran 12 AWG which isn't easy to pull through conduit but I wanted to be able to run power tools and the occasional Blender for Docktails and not have the lights dim when you hit the on switch.

I’m an electrician. When I powered up my dock, I installed a GFCI inline near the panel that feeds the dock circuit and then installed GFCI receptacles at the dock as well. The added redundancy will hopefully never be needed, but it sure is nice to have in case one has a defect or fails for some reason. If someone hired me to power up their dock, I would insist on doing it the same way.

This makes me very glad I spent the money to have a professional wire our dock instead of the clown we were buying the property (that was coming with a new dock) from who claimed he was an electrician.
