You have to be very dedicated to ski in that water. Run off from the farmer's field go directly in to the Maumee and have been identified as a significant component of the algae blooms in Lake Erie that closed down the water treatment plants in Toledo the past couple years. The vast majority of that runoff that is causing this problem is primarily composed of animal waste and fertilizer. The Maumee is typically a mix of dark green or brown in color most days I've seen it.
That's why its called "the Muddy Maumee" I have been in that thing for years, and Never had an issue. IMO it has magical healing powers, or at least it feels that way.
