keep boat or new boat ?????

i have a 1997 ski nautique (196) w/610hrs in great shape but the trailer didn't hold up as well as the boat did.... so i need to get a new boat or a new trailer for my 97... i love the new boats they ski great.. track better... but are they worth the $$$$

    new boat is 44k w/trailer (2007-196)
and i can get maybe 17.5k for my 97

    or new trailer 3k

I have ski and driven the new boats do they ski better yes... do they track better yes... is it work 20k+ not sure....

I ski into 39off alot and the new boat are little better at a short line...

wife says we should use the money and do stuff to the house ... fun fun (but its not her money )

but if I buy a trailer for this one I will never get my money out of the trailer if i would sell in a year or two....

Have you considered having the trailer repaired? What exactly is wrong with it? Even if it needs a little welding and some paint, surely a '97 trailer could be repaired for less than the cost of a new one (<$1k).

I love the new 196, but that TSC1 is a great boat, too. I wouldnt trade up just based on the condition of the trailer. Then again, if youre looking for an excuse to upgrade, here it is!

      Agreed.

The only thing I would add is that it's easier to sell a boat that is <10>10 years. How long do you see yourself holding onto this boat even if you got a new trailer? If you were going to upgrade in a couple of years anyway, now might the time to do it.

Saw your post on Nicholls. Tough question. If it were me, I'd sell the 97 before it loses its resale value any further and then buy a newer boat and hold onto it for six or so years. I think Coach on Nicholls has the Parish family boat for sale--2004 196 for a very reasonable price. Here's the link on here on PN.

Keep the boat. Nothing costs more than a new boat. If you think a new trailer cost a bunch you'll throw up at how much a new boat will cost you in taxes and depreciation the first year. More than likely you won't be sking at 39off forever so don't let that be your main reason (Sorry to burst your bubble ) A new boat will be a used boat in a year.

Ask yourself "If I had $27,000 on the kitchen table would I go buy a new boat or pay off my mortgage, car, credit card, school loan, save for a rainy day etc?"

If you owe nobody a dime, have 6 months living expenses in an emergency fund, and are maxing out your 401k, Roth, etc, Then go for it.

Totally agree with Coinless. If you are a 39 off skier, you must know/ski with people who have newer boats. You could use the 97 as a "trainer" boat. I would definitely fix the trailer and save the cash. Another option would be to look into the promo program. There are people in our neck of the woods who have promo boats and they don't get into 39 off.

I also have a 1997 Ski. I love it! Notice that the 2006 Skis have graphics very similar to the 1997 Ski. I like white analogue gauges, with black numbers, that are easy to read. My boat has 1800 + hours on it. You cannot get a Ford motor anymore. Some consider the TSC1 hull the best trick wake in the TSC series. It is your money, and your wife, and you can do what you want, but if I was in your situation, I think I would keep my not so old friend.

I vote to keep the '97. But, if you must upgrade to the newer hull, I suggest you go used. Let someone else take the depreciation. Must of us Nautique owners are very particular about our boats and you shouldn't go wrong if you find a nice '02 or '03.

If you have the cash and the desire why not upgrade? I would not be too concerned about depreciation as long as you keep the boat at least 5 years. My experience has been around a 25% depreciation at or about 5 yrs old. Another important factor is if you buy at a good price, my best deals have come around this time of year.

                  Good luck!
