2022 G23 - ZZ6 vs ZR7??

Hey all,
Finalizing my order for a new ‘22 G23. We are going with the supplemental ballast and was hoping for thoughts about the stock ZZ6 motor vs the upgrade to the ZR7.

Don’t want to be under powered, but also don’t want to spend money needlessly. We primarily surf and our river is essentially at sea level in eastern Washington.

I have run the ZR7 in my last two boats, and I really like it.

My boats are weighted pretty heavily, since I pull a good bit of Jr. Pro riders on a regular basis. With the ZR7 7.4L there is never an issue with power, even heavily weighted and with numerous people onboard. It does use noticeably more gas than the ZZ6, which I have had on my boats prior to the ZR7.

I would order it again next year except that I am getting a Paragon with the ZZ8 (basically a supercharged ZZ6). Looking forward to trying that engine!

I have had great success with the ZZ6 in my last two G25s I put 700 hours on my 2016 and I was running an extra 650 pounds of lead, never felt underpowered. If you role with a crew of 10 on a regular basis, you may want to go with the ZR7.

I asked myself the same question and bought the diesel. I think it’s the best option.

We had the ZZ6 in the last boat, and went with the ZR7 in our 2021. I do not regret the choice, although the fuel consumption is noticeably worse.

If that had been a option on the Paragon, I would have considered it for sure.

It's interesting - I commented above that I was pleased with the ZR7 choice, but over the weekend our dealer called and said we could trade our 2021 G23 on a 2022 G23 for a reasonable price and have it for Spring. We burned 1/2 a tank in 3.5 hours last weekend and I'm seriously considering sticking with the base engine on the 2022 just based on fuel burn.

If you're not running super heavy, the ZZ6 will be just fine. It is certainly easier on fuel (and quieter) than the ZR7.

Not sure if you've had a chance to drive your Paragon yet, but heads up, even fully weighted on ballast the boat will YANK a rider up out of the water in a hurry... you have to ease into the throttle or your rider better have a really good grip on the handle.
