2020 G23 compared to 2021-2022 G23? Worth it to change?

We are coming up on 230 hours on our 2020 G23 (with about every option on it). Lots of great family times and a few headaches with it (numerous electrical gremlins with current faults, blower not working half the time, thruster working half the time, etc), but overall, wouldnt change it for the world!

That being said, I am drawn to the new body style on 2021's + and especially the telescoping tower on the 2022..we have a bridge that we have to go under to get to the main lake and we have to drop our tower down a bit to get under it..seems like only G23's have to do this as Mastercraft, Supras, etc dont have to...anyways, the telescoping tower would certainly make things easier with that regard.

However, how much better is the surf wave on the new styles compared to my 2020? I have 850lbs lead weight and usually just the family (4 our us and a dog) in boat...I am 260lbs and ride a Soulcraft, kids ride Phase 5 Skims....I run 100% ballast all around 5/0 NCRS and NSS setting. Kids around 60-100% front and 30-50% rear ballast 2-3/0 NCRS and NSS settings....we can all move around the wake and do some tricks (ollies, airs, working on 360's), but I have always felt our wave is big and steep and then bigger and steeper...seems like it could be longer and give more room to "play in" so to speak...will a 2021-2022 give that for us? Seems like the new surf software might be simpler (pick a number look at the shape of the wave and call it good). I see the 2022's have extra ballast which seems great seeing as the 2021's had less ballast....basically, is the surf wave that much better and or longer, etc than what I have? If so, my local dealer has 2 2022's incoming I maybe could trade in on. Thanks for any insight you can give!

If you switch get the 2022 with extra ballast. All I have heard and read is the 2021 is under ballast. For resale alone , the 2022 would be the way to go based on the 2021 being under ballast.

The new G/P hull puts out a surf wave that is profoundly better than the 2020 hull regardless of how the 2020 is weighted. The wave has much more mass providing fantastic push as well as a more forgiving shape for easier tricks and more fun. The 2022 is a much better option over the 2021 if adding lead is a nuisance.

I did a number of comparisons of the new boats and surf wave in this thread.

Agreed...2022 for sure if we do it. Seems like the additional ballast corrected their "mistake" on the 2021 models

Thanks for the link..I remembered that thread, but couldnt find it for some reason...I just re read it and it confirmed what I was "thinking" about the differences between the 2020 and the newly redesigned hull on the 2021 and 2022's.I would much rather have a 2022 with additional ballast and the power telesecoping tower than dealing with lead weight bags now (thats 850lbs more on my lift, and more in the boat when wakeboarding, etc, etc). Will see what the dealer can do on our trade in...believe we can get decent price on our 2020 with the current inventory issues

Being "worth it" is pretty subjective... I just got my 2022 and instantly everyone that tried the surf wave greatly preferred it to my 2019. And that's without the supplemental ballast... So yes there is a big difference in the surf wave... Biggest thing for me was being able to dial down the wave to very mellow, but still keep loads of push! My best advice is get out and demo a new one, then you can decide if the price increase is "worth it" for you!

Emailed my dealer today so will see what they say. Will stop by and see if I can demo one when it comes in (they have two incoming).

Follow up on the post…stopped by dealer today and was in for a shock (2 of them actually). 1) I knew the used market was right. But I didn’t realize how tight. They think I can sell my 20G for 185k clear…that’s more than I paid for it June 2020. 2) I wasn’t prepared for the price increase in a loaded 22 with telescoping tower…msrp 263k…50k more than my 2020 msrp…yikes!!!

For grins I priced out a new mastercraft x star s fully loaded…the dealer came back with msrp of 293k!?! Wtf?!?!?!?! They are discounting down to 230k…so same price as the 22 G OTD…**** these things are getting pricey…my 20 might be good for another year…at least

Also, my dealer only has 15 build slots for 2022 and 8 are spoken for already…it will be awful tough to get a demo on one I think. MC dealer will let me know when they get something in so I can demo it..I’ve never been behind a MC, but they made a lot of changes for 2022. Still, hard to believe the prices these days….

The above content is true for sure, but these hulls are not without issue. They take water over the bow and stern quite easily, which is a serious PITA. A roller headed at you perpendicular to the bow while stopped - good chance water ends up in the bow. If you don’t roll out very gently from throttle after a surfer or wake boarder falls, water rushes the rear cooler and possibly the seats. I’d consider myself an extremely competent boat captain; regardless, I’m conscious of the need to “drive around” the way this boat behaves in the water, not so with my 2017 G23.

That's interesting. My Paragon takes on much less water over the bow than any 2016 - 2020 G I have owned. Even with very large rollers as long as I am idle the water never comes over. Now the cooler in the rear, that's a different story. Do you have weight in the bow?

That's odd...you guys have a cooler on the back of your 2021 Gs? Mine has re-circulating live well listed on the option sheet......LOL

Since we never use the rear cooler it hasn't been an issue for us, but one day while my dad was on the back in the lounge chair and my 13 year old son was driving us back to the dock (I was right next to him), he throttled back from 20mph to idle and swamped my dad completely, he wasn't even wearing a swimsuit. We got a laugh out of it, but I knew I screwed up not teaching the boy about the water over the back, so he's learning that now.
