    Questions about 2022 G23

Hello, I am new to the Nautique family. I have read a ton on this forum before deciding to build a new G23 and have found it invaluable when making some of the option selections. After a 14 month wait (mostly due to Tungsten Grey gelcoat issues) I finally got to take my boat out last week for the first time. The boat looks amazing and am very happy with how it turned out but I have a couple questions for those that have a new G23.
    • There is a loud hissing sound when you stop the engine. My old boat (Tige RZX2) and the 2021 G23 I took out for a demo did not make this sound. The dealer said it has to do with the exhaust for the steer assist blowing excess water out but I wanted to see if anyone else has experience this
    • When cruising or loading up ballast to surf the boat leans hard to the Starboard side. I put all 3 passengers on the port side which wasn't enough then dumped 150# which started to level off. This doesn't seem normal. I can't expect everyone to have to sit on one side of the boat. I am thinking maybe the port side ballast is not filling properly. Any suggestions would be helpful!

I've got the thruster and haven't noticed any hissing when the engine turns off, but it is possible I just don't hear it over the radio, how loud would you say it is? as for the ballast, do you have the supplemental ballast or just the standard? Have you made sure that all the thru hull valves are open so it can fill them? Maybe try filling each one individually to see if it lists as you think it should?

bird_dog0347, thanks for your response! The noise is quite loud. It sounds like someone spraying compressed air for a second or if you have ever turned an engine off when there is no air filter installed. I may have to open the engine compartment and have someone else kill the engine so I can get a better understanding where the sounds is coming from or ride in another G with a thruster and see if it makes the same sound. I do have the supplemental ballast and filled them all although I noticed a heavy lean to the starboard side even with ballast empty and cruising back to the dock. Thanks for the advice on filling one tank at a time. I am new to this boat so not sure exactly how it is set up. On my old one I would just fill until I would hear water spit out or open the lockers and check the bags then turn off the pumps because the fill percentages on the display were off of a timer which were never very accurate. On this one, my understanding is it has a sending unit that measures the capacity so when it says its full I am trusting that it is full but maybe that's not true. How to you override the pumps to keep filling until you see water coming out the ports? The ballast pumps were extremely loud so now that you mentioned it I am wondering if one of the valves was closed and it was just sucking? I had my family in the boat and it was super busy for Easter weekend so didn't have much opportunity to diagnose the issues so thought I would just throw it on here and find out maybe these issues I am describing are totally normal. I may need to go out alone on a weekday and just try a few things out.

The lean is a well-known phenomenon with the G-series boats due to the size of the prop and the direction of spin. Most people add about 2-300 pounds of lead under the observer's seat to offset the prop spin torque.

If your boat sits level when sitting still, but leans while underway, this is your issue. Every single G-series boat has this same lean underway, but it can be managed using the option above, or you could just keep 2-300 pounds more ballast in the port tanks.

Also what engine did you get? Mine is a ZZ8 so that could be a difference on why I never hear a hissing. And I'll second what Jeff said, does it list while resting in calm water or only underway?

My engine does the same thing when I turn it off, on my 2019 as well as my 2022 with the H6/Z6 engine, personally I think it sounds cool lol... As for the list it sounds a little more off normal if you had to put 3 people and dump 150 to get it to ride right... They shifted one battery in the 2022 to help some so I didn't notice my list being as bad on my 2022 compared to the 2019.

I have the ZZ6 engine. So if I am hearing you both correctly you spend $200k-300k+ for a boat and you are left with the options of having the boat lean hard to the starboard side while underway or load it up with lead on the port side? Why wouldn't Nautique shift weight in the manufacturing process or then would it lean while resting in calm water? I have been on multiple Malibu's and Tige's with similar size prop, , HP, length, weight, & ballast and have never noticed any prop torque that would require lead to be added to the boat. For the amount of engineering and attention to detail that goes into these boats this seems like an inexcusable design flaw. Don't get me wrong, its a beautiful boat and I am sure I will get used to it but when you are spending this much you wouldn't think you would need to make all your passengers sit on 1 side of the boat, add lead, or dump ballast to get it to ride level...

My friends newer Malibu and Axis boats with the “fan” prop do the same lean. The higher ratio transmission and subsequent change to a larger prop tremondously improved the amount of torque reaching the water. But certainly it rotates or leans the boat.

I personally would not want a heeled over boat at rest. Besides some docking considerations, heeled over at rest would be an odd appearance.

Agreed. All manufacturers boats of this size with these big props do this. It is not unique to Nautique. The G-series has done this since 2013. There isn't really a way to design in a fix without messing up the wake or making the boat sit crooked when it isn't moving.

I am unsure what "newer" means. But my friends 2015-2018 axis, malibu, and mastercraft don't do this.

It's fine you can adjust for it, but it certainly disconcerting AF when you get in your new to you boat and you pull away from the launch the first time and wonder what the heck is going on. If you weren't on a boat you would think you got a flat tire. ha ha. I laugh at my own joke.

I added about 250 lbs lead in the batt 2 compartment under the observers seat. This won't work in a Paragon as I believe there is a third battery in there.

My friends 2018 A24, 2022 A24, 2020 MXZ, and 2021 LSV all heel at speed until they put about an extra 150-200 lbs under port seats. Last few years of Supras seem the same but I have only been a passenger not a driver of the Supras. I have not been in any newer MCs.

I am not sure what makes/models switched to 17” props and when. But it seems most noticeable on boats with these large props.

You may actually want check/recalibrate the ballast timers. It's a simple fix and it sounds to me like you're dealing with more than prop torque/rotation. I demoed a Mastercraft X22 a few years back and the guy running the demo messed the whole thing up by not checking/recalibrating the timers. Filled up a port side tank 70% of the way and starboard was 100% full. Screwed up the wave and his demo (I rode a different X22 and X24 a year later and both were great boats but are very weight sensitive and having a little lead to offset is the norm in almost every boat I've been on...Axis, Malibu, Supra, Mastercraft, Sanger etc). I subsequently bought a G23. I have a 2021 G23 now and don't haven't ever notice the hissing sound you're talking about. Have you noticed a considerable difference in your wave on either side? Either way, check the ballast timers.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I put 150# of weight that I had under the port side in the battery compartment as suggested. I then got a chance to take the boat back out this weekend and filled all ballast 100% then manually filled each tank until water would spit out just to confirm they were all filling. The LR would never spit water so after looking into this further I found that the LR pump is inoperative so this was the majority of my problem. Although it is disappointing that the pump does not work (or is not getting power) and that the dealer didn't lake test the boat to find this issue before delivery, I was pleased to solve the heavy lean issue and lack of push from the wave that I was expecting compared to my old Tige. Hopefully I can get it fixed soon since it is warm enough here in AZ to surf.

As for the engine noise I confirmed it is not from the exhaust for the steer assist as I opened the engine compartment and had someone else shut off the boat so I could isolate where the sound is coming from. It sounds more like a loud clunk from the front of the engine than a hiss when you have the engine compartment open. I have followed the break in process as suggested by PCM and will continue to drive it hoping it's nothing major until the 25 hr service and have the dealer look at it then unless someone else has any suggestions.

Well, that is a bummer about the pump, but at least you know you're not crazy, and it should be an easy fix.

                              Sweet boat!
