I think a more accurate term is personal property tax. Illinois removed their personal property tax on individuals in 1969, companies in 1979. They found other ways to make up the difference believe me.

SC is brilliant with a lot of foresight. They are ready for the explosion in electric vehicles that do not pay any fuel taxes.
