    Trip Report: Lake Powell

People seemed to like these trip report posts I did last year so wanted to share a bit from my first trip to the wakeboard mecca that is Lake Powell.

    Fast facts:
    • 1200 miles towing round trip (including two 10,000+ ft elevation mountain passes)
    • 7 days / 7 nights on Powell
    • 18 people
    • Air temps: 90s day / upper 60s at night
    • Water temp: ~80F
    • 18 engine hours put on the boat (up to 888 total)
    • Max depth seen: 425 ft
    • 0 break downs*
    • 0 injuries
    What went right:

Trailering: I was nervous about the 600 mile (each way) tow given the mountain passes + hot desert. I use a 2004 V8 4Runner which had recently blown two power steering pumps and a MAF sensor. But fortunately I got all of the kinks worked out in advance, greased everything up, checked my temps regularly via IR thermometer, and had no issues. Towed cover-on to use the floor of the boat for more gear storage. Averaged about 9 mpg.

Reliability: My boat was the oldest of the bunch, but out of the 3 wake boats and 2 jet skis, my 2004 SAN 210 was the only one that didn't have an issue.

Fuel economy: Despite only having a 39 gallon tank, my boat had plenty of gas to spare after a long day trip up to Rainbow Bridge and back. The Tige that did the trip with me came back at 1% fuel. Same-ish # of passengers.

    What went wrong:

Fuel gauge: My fuel gauge likes to read E + "Low Fuel" about 50% of the time under normal operation (does anyone know if this is an easy fix...?). The other half of the time it works normally. So I have learned to ignore it. But after "fueling" the boat up on the last day, I ran out of gas as I coasted into Antelope Marina to come home. Turns out the houseboat main aux tank was empty so the pump was just pushing air into my boat (no gauge on the pump to show how much has flowed). I was lucky to not run out of gas 2 minutes earlier, where on Labor Day Saturday, the canyon was a washing machine of 2-3' rollers in every direction that may have swamped my powerless boat.

Towing behind the houseboat: Learned the hard way that a Figure 8 is not a wet knot. Always use a bowline.

Looks awesome, on my bucket list to do but would be an even farther tow. What does a house boat rental for a week with that sized group cost?

Love Powell! Looks like you guys did that right, safety in numbers and back up boats.
Never had a trip there where someone was cracking a large part of their wallet for repairs at some point, good job.
Didn't have time to watch the entire Vlog (will make a circle there), you did a great job with that. Loved the drone shots, disco dance party, hula hoop surfing, and your Buddy pouring himself out of his rig at the end (been there).

                Thanks all!
filterfish - not sure. The trip organizer has a time share on a the houseboat so not sure what costs were. We all paid him a flat price for boat / gas / food. I think I remember seeing 5-7k per week when I looked at rentals a while back. It’s not cheap!

Thanks Scooter G, that poor soul at the end was me. Haha. Unfortunately been dealing with a bulging disc in my back all year and haven’t been able to ride much. So a few sets at Powell plus the long drive home left me in bad shape. And yes the group we were with has been 6 times before so they knew what they were doing. Lots of safety in numbers and redundancy. Spare parts, radios, first aid kits, ER nurse onboard, etc.

MN Ryan — our crew ranged from mid 20s to mid 40s. Never too late!

Waveslayer — would love to check out Shasta but that’s beyond my towing range! Hoping to explore some more of Wyoming’s lakes next summer. The one we went to this year (Glendo) was great — have a video of that trip on the YouTube as well.

lfadam I appreciate the vote of confidence! My issues would be:

                          1) Our summers are full of kids' sports.
                          2) I don't have a crew like you. My wife and kids would be down, but my brothers-in-law would get hammered the first night and then spend 2 days nursing themselves back to functioning.

I'll live vicariously through your posts!

lfadam, I threw my 1st backflip off some cliffs at Glendo when I was a kid.
Flaming Gorge is a must do for you. We used to hit that every year when the kids were little. Have Family in Denver, we make the haul in from Idaho and meet them at the Gorge for the week, good stuff. It's about 7 hours tugging a boat (way closer than Powell), but worth it. World class fly fishing on the Green River there also.
Sorry about the back man, definitely been there, and driving in a car for an extended period does not do that situation any justice.

Powell House Boat Rentals - Late August thru October is some of the best, that place gets stinkin' fry an egg hot in July & August:

I second flaming gorge, and I would recommend bullards bar too, it is farther, maybe too far. But we liked it better than Shasta.
