I'm installing some cleats and dock whips for a 2011 SAN but I don't have the boat with me. Based on 21 feet length and I'm thinking about 3 feet in from front and rear...maybe 15 feet apart? Anyone have a better measurement?? Thanks!!

Depends on where you plan on connecting the lines to your vessel. You want your whips to extend out max length so you can have enough bow in them to create enough push to keep the boat off the dock. Therefore, line them up with planned connection points on the boat. I keep mine out of the way. The front line is on the lifting bow eye and the rear on one of the transom tie-downs so I placed my whips in line at these points. I have a cleat for a rope in the middle to pull the boat in.

My whip setup.
Some notes:
- Whips should line up directly with where on your boat you're tying them off. My front one isn't perfect but it's where we put the blocking for the whip foot when we built the dock.
- Using the whips and dock lines with the factory cover sucks. You will need to untie the boat and pass the lines through the hole in the cover to the cleat.
- My cover was custom made to wrap around the tie off points. This way my boat can be fully tied off and I can put the cover on without fiddling with any lines. Very helpful if there's a stiff wind or anything.
- You'll want blocking under the dock to re-enforce the whip foot.
- I use two lines to each cleat as a fail safe and also helps with fore and aft movement. We get some pretty stiff winds/storms and in all but the most severe broadside gale, my boat does not touch the dock or move much at all.
