    PCM vs Indmar

I have seen a lot of print ads recently about Indmar's new engine with the catalytic converters built in. Has anybody heard how these are performing and if pcm is working on something like it?

With all the 'green' sentiment that is building in this country, I wonder if it is driving sales for Indmar powered boats...

    RE: PCM vs Indmar

i'd rather see a diesel engine from both.. they're much more efficient..

if anything, although catalytic converters cause less pollution, dont they make the engine less efficient?

      RE: PCM vs Indmar

I hope PCM doesn't have to start using the cats, here is a quote from the AWSA towboat committee report dated January 2007. (They had to relax the standards on the acceleration test to get the cat equipped boats to pass this year)

      http://www.usawaterski.org/speedcont...oat-report.pdf

"4. Acceleration Standards For AWSA Approved Towboats
      • At the 2007 AWSA Towboat tests we had our first exposure to catalytic converter
equipped engines in towboats. Not all engine manufacturers are using "cats" at
this time however it has been mandated that due to environmental issues the
marine engines that we use will all be required to be cat equipped in the near
future. Our initial data indicates that the cat equipped engines may develop less
power than the non-cat equipped engines, especially after the engine gets hot. We
will further evaluate our data and observe cat equipped boat performance "in the
field". Since these are the engines that we will have to work with, we may need to
revise our acceleration standards to realistically align with available engine power."

I'd rather see a diesel engine from both, but they aren't more efficient. More power and better economy, but if you want to get technical with it, the thermal efficiency of both is between 25 and 30%... hehe.

Catalytic converters cause less pollution, yes, but it is wasted energy. All they do is heat up and when they heat up the catalyst burns unburned fuel in the exhaust gas.
However, they create more back pressure on the engines which results in poor(er) exhaust gas scavenging and thus less power with more fuel consumption.

The catalytic converter that indmar is using is somewhat worthless. They have no way of monitoring whether or not it is working. What I mean is that there is no indicator light. They are also underpowered. Yes, PCM will have one when the time comes but it will start out for CA because of their strict standards.

One telling feature (& the type of information I think we need more of) - Number of repairs per 100 engines: PCM-2.5; others (not sure which)- 6.9 & 7.3; per
            customer responses. Interesting. ER

I think indmar has more issues since they are using more compression and more hyped up motors "strokers" etc.

Sounds like PCM marketing BS to me. I'm sure they work until they're subjected to catastrophic failure (which usually means misfire in a car) or some other over-temp/water intrusion event. It's not rocket science, including the power loss, which is definitely not fictitious but can be solved.
