While driving the boat this weekend the power in the boat started acting wierd, for example if I pressed the ballast fill button the perfect pass and stereo would cut out. I look down and my volts were only reading around10.7-11 volts on the gauge. I turned the boat off in the middle of the lake and she wont start, very little if no power at all. The boat has brand new batteries this season, but the alternator is 5+yrs...what do you think it could be? Also can I get an alternator at an automobile shop? its for the gt-40 motor....thanks!

RE: Alternator???
The alternator is one of only a few parts that you want to be am Marine. It has special antispark shields. Having said that there is no reason you can't take it to an alternaotr shop and have it rebuilt. Since you probably have a couple of days that you don't need it and it's easy to remove yourself, thats what I would do. It should run about $100.Nautiqueless in San Diego

Put in the alternator
So I put in a stock replacement alternator. Everything went well but the boat still wont crank ( yes I did charge the batteries!) The boat turns and turns and turns but it doesnt fire, seems like its not getting any fuel. Someone said I may have wired the alt. wrong and its tripping that fuse everytime I try and start it. It was only three wires. I dont see how I got it wrong....any ideas??? FYI I wired it far left green wire, middle black wire and right side red wire....is this right????? thanks guys!

UPDATE!!!
So I took the boat to my shop. I put the alternator on wrong. They got me a new one and charged my batteries. Well took the boat out and everything started to short out. If I hit the ballast the perfect pass would reboot. Then the stereo cut in and out, everything seemed to be cutting on and off...what gives? Now I guess it wasnt the alternator...............grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Re: UPDATE!!!
When I had my old batteries it would do the exact same thing. I bought new batteries, new alternator, now the P.P. doesn't do that anymore! Maybe you need new batteries?
Just because you charged your batteries, doesn't mean their good. Have them load tested.
