I would like to share this adventure with the readers here.
3 Months ago, I purchased a 91 Barefoot Nautique, 7.4ltr 454 big block chevy, 535 hrs. Condition - fairly shot, for the equivalent of about $10 000.(boats are expensive here - import duties = 100% kill the price)
We used her for the remainder of summer. Motor still purs. Had a blast, jeez this thing kicks up a wake! Rear mount big block is the Bomb!
It's now winter (only 4 months). I have started strippin' her down. I was so inspired by the Bare Naked Nautique thread of BMH2208, I just had to do it myself.
I am about as anal retentive as BMH when it comes to getting the dirt off.
So I started with the stern took off all the goodies including the Swim plate which was a horrible dark black color, with very little resemblance of what was once a teak board.
I had to strip, plane and sand each piece, to get to the surface rot, this horrible black surface grunge on the wood.
I removed all decals, started sanding down….first 800 then 1200 now on 1500. That yellow white is starting to look white again.
Panels and seats have been removed and sent in for re upholstery, should be back soon.
You have no idea of the build up of grime over 15 years of abuse.
Well I only have 3 more months so I better get going. I will keep posting updates. Should have that teak swim plate sorted on the weekend.
