    Boat Transporters

Hey, does anyone know of any good, safe boat transporters? I might need to move my super air from Miami to Northern California in the near future. Thanks.

I just moved my Nautique from Atlanta to Dallas using Uship.com. It's like an Ebay for shipping.

UShip.com moved my old I/O from AZ up to Michigan in May of this year. The bidding started out in the $2700 range and by the time all was said and done I got it completed for $1600. Just make sure that you use a DOT licensed shipper and that they also have insurance coverage for your boat. There were a lot of guys bidding on my boat that wanted to make a weekend trip to Vegas and then pull my boat back to the midwest using my shipment as a way to finance their trip. Since they were not DOT licensed, I stayed away from those guys and found a great shipper that got my boat there in great shape with 20K of insurance for the right price. Try to be flexible on the dates and it will help you out. Ask a lot of questions of the shippers and make them share their DOT license and insurance information before you accept their bid. UShip was also running a rebate when I used their service and they paid me the rebate via PayPal and I was very happy with their site and service.

Contact this person - Jay McArdle fstlnj29@yahoo.com. He moved my boat from Dallas to Raleigh NC through Uship. But the key is to lineup you move with him. He specializes in moving racing sail boats and moves them all over the US - he knows the care that is needed on an expensive boat. On mine, he had picked up a 38 racing sail boat in SF, dropped in Houston, picked up my 196, 24 hours later 7am at my driveway. It cost me $750 for 1200 miles - which is very low, but that is because mine was an add on - he was towing on the other all legs..... My other bids were above $1000. If you can line your move with his other moves, will save you some $.

              RE: Boat Transporters and Insurance

One other consideration when hauling the boat is to verify that the mover maintains sufficient insurance for any damages sustained during transport. Your mover can even provide a certificate of insurance on your boat in advance of the move.

                Hello Ski Safe,

How does Marine insurance work with regards to towing??

So many scenarios that could play out here, basically when on the trailer is the boat covered or not through the marine policy??

                  Ski Safe,

Correct me if I am wrong, IIRC, in shipping speak, the insurance premium is called a "tariff" that covers a loss during shipping and runs to the boat owner, and, absent payment of the tariff by the owner, the boat owner assumes all risk of loss. The boat owner needs to make sure that he is the beneficiary of the insurance and that the listed value of the policy is sufficient to cover a total loss. Here is a link to an article about interstate shipping liability and insurance issues under the "Carmack Amendment."

You're right that there are a ton of potential scenarios. The SkiSafe policy does not exclude coverage on your boat while it is commercially hauled, though we recommend that customers obtain a certificate of insurance from the hauler.

You should certainly refer to your specific policy as there are many boat insurance and marine contracts on the market and not all provide this coverage.

While on the road your auto insurance only covers liability from the boat. Any boat insurance policy should cover damages to the boat itself while you are towing it to fill in that gap. If you have any doubts about that coverage, make sure you confirm it right away -- no reason for that absence!

This is exactly right. Your boat insurance policy may provide the necessary coverage while the boat is hauled. Any commercial hauler should provide a certificate of insurance covering your boat in transport as this offers many advantages, but you should also confirm whether your boat insurance covers the haul.
