Super Air and Super Sport owners, Steering Question.

I recently purchase a 2000 Super Air, all of my previous boating experience has been on direct drive inboards. The steering on my SAN is perfect to the left but extremly tight to the right. The boat also has a fairly strong pull to the right at all speeds. My questions are as follows. Does the tunable rudder have a huge impact on this or is it small affect. After taking it out of the water I noticed it was slightly off center. Or is there likely to be something wrong with the steering. Those that own or have driven this v-drive model a lot please compare it to the normal steering of a DD. Thanks for any help given.

SANs turn easier to the left than the right, but it should be nowhere near "extremely hard". I have a 2000 as well, and previously owned a DD. It's not as responsive as the dd, harder to so the same-length 180's , but it still drives light, two fingers through the wheel for left or right. How much weight have you added? A friend's 2001 SAN is noticeably more sluggish than mine, but he has a ton of sand in the bottom. If your boat is pulling to the right as you noted, and still steering hard to the right, then adjust the rudder tab to center it. It should be fairly neutral at the speed you normally tow at. If it was pulling to the left, centering it would probably fix the problem your describing, but I haven't seen a Nauti pull AND steer hard to the right.

By the way, if your previous DD was not a Nautique, it most likely had a left-hand drive, which made it steer easier to the right. Nautiques have a right-hand drive, so they will steer easier (and naturally back to) the left.

Thanks for the response, I think next time we are at the lake I will play a lot with the rudder and see if I can get the response I expect. My old boat was a Nauti but it had a new engine put in it so the rotation was not like all other Nauties.

Try the tab, if not, you need to look into the cable itself to see if it is the issue. You can disconnect the cable from the rudder then turn the wheel. If it is still stiff, it is a cable. If it is not stiff, the rudder needs to be greased.
You haven't hit anything have you?

          No I haven't hit anything!

I think I need to spend a day playing with different settings, thanks for the help.

I just got a 2000 SAN it does the exact same thing. I have to use both hands to turn the steering weel to the right. To the left I can use one hand. Let me know if you figure it out.
