    Items Included with New Boat

First time buying a new boat... (hopefully withing the week)...

Does anyone have input on the type of things I should be expecting to be included in the price? (I.E. fenders, floatation cushion, etc) or does it vary greatly from dealer to dealer?

    Thanks!

      Familyman -
Usually the dealer will give you some sort of a discount if you buy a boat from them - maybe 10 - 20% - off stuff like ropes, PFD's, bumpers, boat accessories, etc.
If they have a decent proshop you can save a few bucks on all that stuff you "need".

I had to buy pretty much everything and the dealer didn't have any of it. I went down the street to West Marine. Picked up bumpers, ropes, anchor, and orange life jackets.

Same as C-Money. I went out on some serious buying binges this spring for everything from rope to wetsuits to skis. The dealer threw in a mirror and a spotter seat (sweeet), but none of the "little"stuff. The dealer had no pro shop, so no discount. I owned nothing before the 206. The bill for everything is enough to make you choke.

Just a pretty obvious tip, too: I had grown up boating on small fishing boats on small lakes where there was always a couple of beat up orange life jackets tucked under the seats -- and absolutely no law enforcement. When I got the 206 I read the MN state boating guide. I needed a few things I wasn't aware of: Fire extinguisher, throwable pfd, etc. I was just talking to a skiing friend and his buddy got nailed a couple years ago for having the wrong size pfd for his kids. I'm now on busy metro lakes with lots of water patrols. I have all the right equipment in the boat all the time for everyone in the boat.

I would 2nd the reading up on your local boating laws. Each state can be a little different, you don't want to get a ticket for not having the required items on board. Go to a good shop, look at the PFD's if you have kids make sure you get one that fits them now! Don't buy it with the idea they'll grow into it. You also will want plenty of ropes for docking, fenders to protect your "new baby," possibly an anchor depending on what your plans are, a tool kit of some sort, you may be required to have flares on board if you have a problem. Also, there's no need to run out and buy all the "toys" figure out what you'll enjoy and buy them as needed, that big giant tube can look cool at the store, but when you get it on the boat and see you have no space for it you might regret it.

My dealer was awesome, with the boat purchase he gave me 3 bumper fenders with lines, the original stainless steel mirror holder that mounts to the tower, and a CIPA mirror.

And Best of All - 4 generic Orange Life Vests - LOL.

I believe a mirror, fire extinguisher, horn, bow/stern lights, lanyard, battery tray/and or cover, battery terminal covers should be included regardless of the model you purchase, most of these things would be required depending on the state you live in.

What may or most likely would be required in most states and probably not included are a PFD for each occupant and any skier(s), my state also requires a throw-able floatation device as well.

For all of the miscellaneous items, i.e. bumpers, PFDs, etc., I would recommend going to a Bass Pro Shop if you have one around; they typically have good prices on these types of items, probably due to the bulk that they buy them in. For ropes, boards, skis, etc., Wakeside, Buywake, and eBay are your best bets for good deals.

Dealer included a "Coast Guard package" i.e. 4 orange life jackets, paddle, fire extinguisher, and a throw cushion. Also provided 2 bumpers, a shock/recoil tube, 2 bow lines.

A boat cover and bimini top were also included. The dealer also has a sign painter, paint the registration numbers on the boat.

Threw in a couple of nautique hats as well.

Also provided a discount on anything bought in the pro shop the day I picked up the boat. Can't remember what the discount level was.

I got all factory installed items, but I get great prices on accessories. Since it's my 3rd boat I had most of what I needed.

RE: Items Included with New Boat

I got a fire extinguisher and a pack of lifejackets/throw cushion in a zippered carrying bag. Not sure if it was required by the state that those were included or not, but I bet it is.

The fire extinguisher was a small white powder version that was loose. I went to the local lowes or home depot and bought a fire extinguisher mounting bracket that fits it and mounted it on the driver's kick panel where the fuse box is mounted for quick easy access by all persons.

I have been stopped many times by the lake patrol, and they usually ask for the PFDs, but some times they ask for the fire extinguisher too. it is easy to just point at it mounted there, and they usually leave when they see your safety equipment so readily accessible. If it is hard to get to, then you won't be able to use it when you need it. Same thing with life jackets. if they are in a closed locker, and you need one quick, it will be too late.
