I have a 97 SN 197. The boat does not throw a very big wake. I load the boat with fat sacks, but I am sick and tired of filling and emptying. Can a wedge be installed on a CC or can a ballast system be installed? i am looking for options that take up less space in the boat. lastly, what would be the best setup for this boat....ie speed weight and placement, and line length. I put a 550 in back and two smaller sacs beside engine. Im wondering if weight in the nose would help? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

RE: wedge for CC?????
i would reccomend a ballast system rather than a wedge setup. with the wedge, u'll need to do a lot of research on the force that will be put on the transom and will more than likely need to build up the transom ALOT to prevent it from being ripped off. not to mention the cost of building or buying the actual wedge. even after all that, u won't see a significantly larger wake....
i would venture to say that about 1500lbs of ballast would produce a fairly nice wake on ur 97. i'd use ur 550 in the back and put a couple 400s beside the engine and then a couple hundred pounds up front....

RE: wedge for CC?????
Did my old SN with metal ballast. The metal takes 1/8 of the space.
We had the metal as far as back as possible. So no midship of front balast.
There you have a midship enigine, you have to simulate the weight distribution of a SAN.
So weight in the back only.
Another check, at 20mph the nose of the boat should be that high, that a midget couldnt see the horizon.
Succes

RE: wedge for CC?????
Y do you own a world class ski boat, specifically designed for no wake slolam skiing if you want a wake boat for boarding? The TSC hull isnt a good choice for a crossover boat. My favorite setup in that boat is on a ski course, driver, observer, half tank of gas, 34mph, 28 off. Perfect.

RE: Re: wedge for CC?????
I used to have an "M" ski boat with wedge. I didn't use the wedge because it seemed to produce a huge trough. I loaded the 99 response lx up with about 2200 lbs of Fat Sacks: 1500 lbs at the back and sides of the motor, 350 in the trunk at the very back, and about 400 lbs in the bow. Not enough weight in front caused pogoing and washed out wakes, too much in front would bring the boat up on a higher plane and make the wakes smaller. It threw up a reasonable wake, but it is really not the right tool for the job, wakes still smaller than a wakeboard boat with factory ballast. Until you can get a wakeboard boat, I'd keep on filling the sacks and have fun with it as is, I don't think a wedge is better than weight.

RE: Re: wedge for CC?????
I have a 99 SN which is the same hull if you have a SN, or at least very close if you mean SNOB by 197. Putting the wedge on would most likely ruin the hull becuase it would put a lot of stress where the boat is not desinged to handle it. I saw the shell of a SN with a cracked hull where someone tried at one point - it didn't work so they stripped the hull and it was just sitting in the yard.
The wedge changes the riding angle of the boat and therefore the shape of the wake, but the wedge doesn't make the boat displace more water and create a 'bigger' wake. You can get a similar effect to the wedge by putting bunch of weight at the rear of the boat.
I've had as much as 1100# accross the read and 350# on each side of the engine and the SN hull will still plane out at about 21 and the wake shape goes to a slalom wake. If I run under 20mph the wake is ok for my kids that weigh less than 100lbs. The problem with the SN for wakeboarding is that the entire back of the hull is designed to create lift which is exactly what you don't want for a nice wakeboarding wake. Just take a look at the angle the spray comes off of a SN and then look at the angle the spray comes off a SAN. This is a good indication of the amount of lift created.
I guess Hollywood said it right - you'll need a different boat for a big wake, but if you are like me and still like to slalom ski with kids that wakeboard - there is yet to be a boat that does both well. There are several that do both ok.
