Trailer issues on SuperSport

I have a Eagle single axle trailer with Drum brakes on my '99 ss. I have added tons of options to the boat (amps,tower,ballast,battery) and I had the boat/trailer weighed at a truck stop and it came in at 5,150 lb. I just finished a roadtrip from Texas to Wisconsin and the bearings blew out on me halfway... Complete trainwreck...7 hrs and two pissed off kids and wife and we were off again. My questions are:

1. Is this too much boat for this trailer
2. Anyone know a good tandem, black, removable tongue with disc brakes for sale?
3. Anyone need a good single axle with all new bearings, led lights, drum brakes?

I am hesitant to make another trip with this boat/trailer setup?

Thoughts?

Not sure about the weight max....but, I can tell you that I am struggling with maintenance issues on my single axle Ramlin trailer. I have a 99 Sport....and I am worried that for as much towing as I do, the single axle is not enough. I have spent way more on trailer maintenance over the past two years than on the boat itslef.

Recently I had the right side leaf spring u-bolt break on a recent trip. Luckily I broke down 1 mile from a large Indy boat dealer.....and not out in the middle of the sticks. Three hours later, we were on our way.....but the tire tread was shreaded due to rubbing on the trailer.

single axle trailer weight limits are usually 3500lbs I would never ever ever tow a v drive on a single! i know alot do. but ive personally owned a mastercraft 19' ski boat and had the axle fail under it and had it dragged off the highway. now i run tandem axles on all my boats!

id imagine that your supersport weights in at about 32-3500lbs in factory trim minus tower and stereo and all goods. id be willing to bed that you are exceeding that limit of 3500lbs on the single axle.

im sure some will argue that a single is more then adiquate. but dude if you have a 30k+ wakeboat why not have a nice trailer you know will hold it with out a dought?

just my thoughts.


FYI, check out craigslist! i have bought several nice tandem axle boat trailers on there. and texas near the austin area has lots of boats and parts on it!

Thanks for the responses! It's official I have a great single axle nautique trailer for sale for anyone interested. I am on hunt for a tandem... Anyone knows one in Houston/Austin I am all over it!

btw-- The axle on my single is a 6,000 lb axle. I also put D range Marathons, but it appears the bearings cant handle the weight....??

if its a 5 lug wheel like everybody elses be suprised if it is actually a 6klb axle but i have been wrong before.

I have a 97 Super Sport on Eagle trailer and I also experienced wheel bearing blowout, but I am not sure when they were changed out from previous owner. Luckily I got a rollback to tow it to my house and I found bearings locally as Eagle wasn't going to any extra effort to ship me any. Anyway I am not sure as to life of bearings, but would figure long distance driving would be better with tandem axle. I never make any long road trips, so single axle is okay for me, but I agree it's alot of weight!

You may check your trailer but usually trailers have a wieght plate/sticker on them showing all of the capacities of the trailer. Gross Weight, Gross combined weight ect..ect..

On top of that you may have been lucky to not have had a tire blow, you may have been close to the max tire wieght limit.

The most important thing for preventing bearing blow out (once you work out the capacity issue) is keeping them clean and greased. If you spin the wheel with the trailer jacked up and you hear any scraping, grinding (and it's not the brakes) then you should change the bearings. It's also a good idea to use something like the Bearing Buddy fittings on the end of the hub and grease them before every long trip, and check them periodically. Do this with your new tandem axle and you should have no trouble... it probably has fittings on it already, and your old trailer probably does too... anyway good luck!

i cant imagine that single axle is a 6000lb axle? I had a 33' toy hauler with dual axles that where both rated at 6000lbs each and they where 16" rims with like a 225 tire. plus they are 6 lug axles.

course ive been wrong before. I still cant belive they sell these boats with single axle trailers. I guess im just paranoid.

I would not have had a clue to the size of the axle unless I was stuck on the side of the road for 6 hours(Between Texarkana and Littlerock). I got real familar with the parts at the local repair shop. My axle is a 6K, 6 lug, drum brake.

Once I got the bearings fixed I towed it to Wisconsin and back to Houston with no problems other than a serious gas bill! BTW-- Anyone looking for a tow vehicle, my new 2007 Denali XL is the bomb! 400HP and 13.5 mpg in 100 degree heat with the AC on full.....IMO, there is no other vehicle that performs better for the money.

man 13mpg towing a boat in a gasser is not bad.

i mean i get 17-20mpg in my cTD with the AC on 400hp 700lb ft tq. but you got way more passenger room then me!
