Ever Turned your AIR Nautique over?

With all the weight we are running in these boats now, I am interested to know if anyone has turned one over or swamped the whole boat while surfing, etc.

I had 18 kids in my 211 for a photo and it got pretty squirlley (it was not running)

RE: Ever Turned your AIR Nautique over?

I always thought there was a reason for the capacity tag by the throttle - all the weight everyone brags about is way over the rating fo the boat and your insurance company will not pay for a boat that sank with 1500 lbs of extra ballast

Not quite 18, I think we were around 16 for a barefoot line. 20 foot dyne with twin 225 Evinrudes. With this many you have to keep the engines in gear even at the dock to keep the water out of the motor well.

The capacity plates are based on an ideal operating condition, and for a boat to be NMMA certified it has to be able to handle MUCH more than what its capacity plate says. Think about small boats, rated for "up to 25hp" or something. It's not like if you put a 30hp engine on there, it will snap in half. The rated capacity is therefore way less than what the boat can safely handle; that's up to you and how comfortable you are driving your boat way overloaded. That and the lake police. Funny enough, I don't think there are laws (at least not in NH) against overloading your boat, as long as you have enough lifejackets. And fat sacs don't need lifejackets. But people make great ballast because they can all get out in a hurry if they have to (been there). I take waves over the stern of my boat everytime we surf with it; that's what bilge pumps are for. As far as flipping, I have never heard of anyone doing it, and I think it's very unlikely, but absolutely possible. When we had about 5000 pounds in the 98 super sport, someone drove the boat through its own wake side to side, and the boat was as close to flipping as I'd ever hope to see it. But all we lost were the 2 fat sacs off the rear deck and the guy who was sitting on top of them with his digital SLR - which he managed to keep above water, somehow. anyway, that's my 2 cents, and then some.

We had 16 in my 210 this summer, not to ride just to go to a party and the lake warden made us go back and get another boat and split the people. He asked me what it said on the plate, and I told him 10 people, and he said the game warden was setting at the bridge and would write us a ticket for that. True or not, I don't know, I told him I always thought if you had enough jackets in the boat you were good, and he said that wasn't the case. I wish I knew the truth on that.

Most stuff like that depends on the state... you can look it up online in a lot of states...
