    230 Team-5.7L or 6.0L?

Anyone out there have the chance to run a 230(or 236) with the new 5.7L 343hp? Wondering if it is necessary to go to the 6.0L. thanks.

I don't have a 230 or 236, I have a Team 226 with ZR6 and am a big fan of the ZR6 - 6liter. I have found that with a heavy boat like the 226, especially when you load it up with passengers, gear, wake enhancements - you will definitely appreciate it when you have that extra power and acceleration when needed.

My response would be to try both the Excal 330 and the ZR6 and see how it feels with your typical load. From there make a decision.

ZR6 is more money - but in the long run, its worth it.

    My 2 cents.

Ordering mine this sat with the zr6. I do weight mine heavy though. I have had 2 nautiques and 1 malibu all with the smaller motors (standard ones) and proped them down. I have decided just to go with the bigger motor to start with and not have to worry about reproping them. 390hp sounds like enough to me.

if the boats didnt perform to the nautique standard with base line engine, then they wouldnt even be an option. every wake specific boat i have had has had to be propped down regardless of the engine, and that includes my ZR6. had it not been the last one on the lot, i would not have bought it with the ZR6. while the ZR6 makes more HP, it does it at the upper end of the RPM range. the TQ difference between the two is not nearly as big, and there is hardly a noticeable difference in TQ at the speed where you are using the engine for wakeboarding...

it's a $4500+ gas guzzling upgrade that still required a $400 prop change and wont fetch nearly $4500 on resale.

Im curious how you determined the ZR6 to be "gas guzzling" compared to the Excalibur. I have no first hand experience, but since the ZR6 is lighter and benefits from a newer design, I would assume it to be, at the very least, equally efficient.

                I have been in a 236 with the Excalibur 330 (2007), and I owned a 2007 236 with a ZR6. The Excalibur was fine, but the ZR6 was certainly better. I am ordering a 230 very soon, and it'll have the ZR6.

the zr6 is lighter because of its aluminum heads (dont think it has an aluminum block, but could be wrong). that weight difference is probably around 50 lbs or so, making it a non factor. even if it were 200 lbs, it would still be a non factor when considering it is pushing a 4k plus boat. it also has VV timing which is supposed to flatten the tq curve and may have a positive effect on fuel consumption. yet, it also has 300 more cubic centimeters to fill with fuel... so even though it may have a more modern, fuel effecient design, it also requires more fuel to operate.

my experience is based off of side to side comparisons in 06 210's and 06 220's, weighted similarly. in my opinion, there is no noticeable power diff, and certainly nothing anywhere close to justifying the $4k+ upgrade. additionally, when i had my Calabria Pro V w/ a 6.2L black scorpion, there was no noticeable difference between it and my friends Pro V with the standard 5.7L 330 HP engine. the major difference was that i spent way more in fuel. finally, i spend a lot of time on an 07 Tige w/ a 330 HP engine that jumps on plane way faster (I know different hull designs so I am comparing apples and oranges) and uses SIGNIFICANTLY less fuel than i do. he can stretch his 50 gal tank for a whole weekend, whereas mine will make it just more than a full day.

we all run 2k+ ballast over stock. the only time the boats performed worth a dang was when we put the appropriate props on them, not when we dished out mega bucks for 10 more lb/ft of torque...

last note: a good friend just bought a 236. he demoed one with the 330. and thought it was a little sluggish when he had a full crew. against my advice, he let the salesman talk him into the zr6. 2 weeks after he bought it he was back down at the dealership buying a power prop because he thought the zr6 was still sluggish...and he only runs a big crew with no additional ballast...

..and we all know boatech provides positive, unbiased opinions.

i have a 07 220 330EX with the 1235 prop and it works perfectly when weighted with stock 1000lbs + 1500lbs additional +2-3 people in the boat. it would be fun to have the 375hp, but it is definitely not needed if you prop it right. with the 1235 you do lose some top end though, so if you want power and 40+ mph you would need the 375 i guess.

yep the truth is what im about son. the 6.0L is the way to go in that size boat and if you settle for the exc. thats your choice. but i hear it every day "i wish i would have got the 6.0L" from 210 and 220 owners. so the man asked i told him my take on it. i spend many hours every week driving boats for the past 15 yrs. my opinions are based on that not because of what brand of boat i own. yeah i know its a cc site, but i read up on all brands of boats to stay informed and gain info important to my job.
