2015 SAN 230 piggyback ballast upgrade

We will be picking up our new 2016 SAN230 tomorrow and I would like to get the additional ballast ordered. What are everyone's thoughts on custom bags? I called up to Wakemakers and they recommended 53x16x22. I am going to remeasure tomorrow, but I was thinking that I would need a 55x16x25. I do plan on removing the trays so I am not worried about keeping them. They also recommended the 500 pound bow sac for the front.

I have 400 pounds of lead that I will be moving over from our current boat. I am thinking of putting that under the rear seats against the wall of the rear lockers.

What are everyone's thoughts on this set up? I do not want to do anything that involves adding extra pumps or visible bags, but we want the best wave possible. I hear that this model loves a lot of weight.

Markj has a little more experience with bigger bags and moving lead around so he maybe able to help, but I do not currently run any bow weight. I do have some lead in the back but just enough to move to offset prop rotation/people. the set up you are talking about sounds like it will work great though...I would hold off on bow until you test out what you already have. UNLESS you plan to wakeboard with the back bags all the way full, then I am fairly certain you will need bow weight to get the boat to plane off. Good luck, post pics!

I have also not ordered but 55x16x25 matches my measurements. I am considering increasing my width to 17 in to increase friction against hard tank and removable engine dividers in an attempt to increase stability and decrease the potential for the bag to "migrate" towards the rear. Apparently people have had issues with bowing of the rear dividers (aft of the removable dividers) and apart from massive pieces of plywood, no great solution has been identified as of yet.

Agree with the need for IBS, we likely would not wakeboard with full ballast so I plan to hold off.

I will try to post pictures in near future, but there is a 2ft-ish section of the engine divider behind the removable section that is unsupported that seems to be an issue when the bags "roll" to the side and pushes it over towards the engine. Hard to explain but once you see it, it'll make sense.

I really find it interesting that several people on here claim to be running the standard wakemakers 750s and yet say they can run with the trays in. I could see those bags blowing out the wall with the trays in for sure.

So I called back up to Wakemakers and talked to Spencer. As always he was very helpful. He created the custom bags and put all the fittings I needed on the order. He said with this custom bag (54x16x24) that the rear divider supports weren't necessary. He also said that I shouldn't need a bow sac. Of course if both of these are needed down the road I will add them.

One thing I did ask is if an upgraded prop was necessary. He said that it probably was as the boat came with a 1235. (14.5x14.25) He recommended a 2079 which is also a 14.5 inch props, but said that a 15 inch might work. I'm thinking of pulling the 2313 off of my old boat when I trade it in.

Has anyone run a 15 inch prop on their 230?

You can run the 750s with trays but not full. I've not t figured out the urge for the tray....in most cases we throw wet jackets back there with no trays . I'm not sure why I person would want them except for containing smaller stuff and they look good.. Ours have been in attic since the first week. I guess the new owner can decide what they want to do with them.

You know what, you're probably right on this. I was just gun shy because the boat I am coming from struggled with the 1235. However, I was also running 5,600 lbs of weight in that boat as opposed to the 3,300 pounds or so I will be running in this boat.

I should pretty much know for sure today though, the stereo should be finished and we should be able to go out and give her a try!

Yes sir for sure. I'll post pictures of the boat and introduce it later today assuming we pick it up today. Then as soon as I get the new custom sacs and finish tweaking the wave I'll post pictures of it.

No way you can keep the trays in when you completely fill the bags. No bow weight for me.

I gotta thing a 12" pitch prop on that boat is going to SCREAM! I ran the 1617 on my 210 (it won't clear more than 14 inch prop), and it was perfect. I had similar ballast as you and the exact same engine (although some of my weight was in the front) - we were 80% wakeboard 20% surf. I highly doubt you'd need any more than the 1615 on that boat (14.5 x 13.75)
