    2020 G23 surf settings

I have two questions. Last year I learned how to surf. I am a big guy. 6'3 300lbs. I had a hard time learning to surf fast enough to be able to let go of the rope. After a while I figured it out. Throughout the summer I progressed to being able to carve a bit but not much more. I purchased a phase five board from a recommendation by our dealer. This year we purchased a 2020. I know its the same as our 2019 as far as a wave is concerned but I feel like I'm moving so much slower. I have to put almost all my weight on my front foot. Any carving causes me to stall and thats it. My settings are as follows...NSS 0. NCRS 5 All ballast 100% full. Are these the best settings for a big 300 pounder to get enough push to be able to have enough speed? Or is it simply a mechanical issue with how I surf? Second question is other than the kong what board can anyone recommend that is good for my size but will be faster than the Kong? Sorry for the drawn out post.

Check out the Phase 5 Hypsta. I’m 5’ 11” 280 and had success with the Kong, but it’s so bouyant and hard to maneuver. The larger Hypsta board (hybrid) let me carve and have a little more fun. I used standard settings on my 2018 G23 with 250lbs lead under the passenger seat. Speed 11.2-11.6 depending on number of people in the boat.

move your NSS to 1 or 2. it will clean the wave up also dont fill your ballast to 100%. try the opposite side of surf side to 1/2 or 1/4. A bit of a list will give you more push

It looks like your progress has stalled a bit. This is normal. Apologies to the poster above but please don't mess with your NSS setting. No good will come of this on a late model G23. You should be at NSS=0, NCRS=5, Speed about 11.5. Here's the thing EVERY new surfer has trouble staying on the wave. And the first thing they want to do is buy a new board or mess with surf settings. In almost all cases foot position, not keeping toe side pressure, is the reason most beginners lose the wave. Please revisit these series of posts from last year. We covered everything needed to get back to where you were. https://www.planetnautique.com/vb5/f...eds-help/page3

Feel free to post a video to the YouTube channel so we can diagnose.

Finally, here is one piece of information worth checking out. As you know we compete at the world level and are meticulous about our wave. When I received my 2020 G23 the wave was not as long and as powerful as our 2019. I moved weight and performed a vast amount of experimentation but still could not get the wave to be as solid as our prior boat. I compared the two waves on video and spoke to Nautique. They said they were seeing some impact to the wave from the RIVER MODE setting. Make sure it is disabled. Of course on my 2020 RIVER MODE was set to ON by default. I immediately disabled it and the wave on my 2020 is now spectacular. All the best!

It's funny you say that about the wave on the 2020. We have definitely noticed a difference. Not just for myself. But for my wife who is very small and light and would have no issues even she has noticed that it's different. I will check and see if the river mode is turned on when we go out this afternoon.

Yes, it's very significant. Here is the wave on my 2020 after we disabled River Mode. It's perfect!

greggmck Are you riding with any additional lead/metal weight? If so how much and where are you distributing it? I am going to try disabling the river mode this weekend but curious to what your setup is... I am rocking 500 Ibs - 100 Bow, 300 Port, 100 Starboard...

Hi Greg, I have a 2020 G23. That is an amazing wave in that picture! I would very much enjoy a wave that looks like that. Would you mind recapping what all of your settings where?

I believe I read the following:
                      NSS 0
                      NCRS 5
                      MPH 11.5
Ballast, what percentage of ballast where you running in that picture?
How many people did you have in the boat during that picture?

I often have 11 people in my boat and this past weekend I noticed that my wave kept washing out. I was running the following:
                      NSS 0
                      NCRS 5
                      MPH 10.9
                      Ballast at 50%

I would enjoy your recommendation in order to get a wave like the one in your picture.

For the picture I posted above I was at 11.3 MPH, NSS 0, NCRS 3, 4 adults in the boat, all ballast full and 800lbs of lead placed in locations described in the link above.

To diagnose your problem I would fill all ballast and run these settings or yours (it should not matter) to see if your wave washes out in smooth water. All waves will get some wash in rough windy conditions. If you don't get a clean wave it is most likely caused by River Mode. I had to call my dealer to get the dealer code to disable the paddle wheel (it was enabled in the dealer code, but it was not installed). This caused problems with the NSS deployment.

So first disable River Mode in the user settings. If that does not fix the wave, call the dealer and ask for the dealer code to see if you have a paddle wheel mistakenly set as installed by the factory. If so select Not Installed and the wave should be spectacular.

Hope this helps. LMK if you have any other questions.

Thanks Greg, I have saved your settings into one of user settings and am looking forward to getting back out on the water. My dealer and I verified that the boat was not in River Mode and that it had the paddle wheel feature disabled. One more request, I have been watching your you tube channel and I wondered if you would be kind enough to post a picture of how you have your Go Pro mounted to your transom. I have the quick adapters and a series of arms and linkages but seem to only cut the heads off of my surfers when recording their set. Would you be willing to post a picture of your go pro set up on your transom? Thanks again and I will report out on my wave.

We previously used the Nautique GoPro mounts for years, but we had to regularly treat the lenses to repel water and even then we would often have water spots ruin a great shot. So I set up GoPro Surf Board mounts higher on the transom with a safety lanyard tied to the camera. Here is a picture of the port side mount. We had the same one on the starboard side but in the end rarely used it because the port mount captured riders on both sides waves pretty well.

That looks pretty sweet. I am just using the suction cup mount on the outside of the surfside seat on our GS22. If we switch sides, I just take it off and resuction it onto the other side.
