We are newbs at the surfing thing. My dad and I picked up this 2017 GS20 last fall, and I’ve been pouring through every thread I could find on the GS boats to dial in the surf wave. We tried a few different boards, tried listing by shifting ballast, tried letting some out of the bow, tried playing with the ncrs/nss settings. We were starting to look at additional ballast systems, and I finally came across a thread suggesting to back off the surf speed.
that was the ticket. Knocked it down to 10.5mph with otherwise factory surf settings of 100% ballast in all tanks, NSS 0, and NCRS 5 and I can surf all day now. Took 6 kids surfing on the board with me today, was able to stick the 2 smallest on my shoulders. Got to start carving some, and was able to find and stay in that sweet spot pocket. Had about 12-15 feet I could play on.
I think 11.2 was just too fast for our board/rider weight to keep up on. I’m 5’6”, 167lbs. My preferred board of the 3 we have is a 5’-0” liquid force rocket, we also have a skim board given to us by the previous owners, don’t remember what brand, and we have a 5’-4” hyperlite broadcast that I used when surfing with the kids. I think the biggest was my oldest son at about 60lbs, the smallest my youngest son at 28lbs.
I think for anyone trying a GS20, and maybe the 22 and 24, if you are having trouble catching that endless wave, add dropping the speed a bit to your list of things to tweak.
