Hmmm I will make some phone calls and also look into draining the oil to see if it is milky or not. Was yours acting funny and that is what led you to the v drive? Or was it just doing maintenance that led you to find issues with the v drive?

Had an email in to David at N3 and he said exactly what you told me, possibility of being cracked internally. Going to try to drain it this morning. Are you familiar with what oil is used in the v drive and how much our model takes? I did a quick google search and saw that SAE 30 weight is what they were told. Preferably non detergent oil. Have you been told anything different?

When test drive my boat it ran fine but I remembered it sounded super loud when I test drove it. I had never drove a nautique before so at the time I thought that was normal. What it was I think was the fact that there was no oil in the Vdrive to dampen the noise of the gears meshing. When I saw it had no oil that's when I pulled it out and took it half way apart. The water chamber was all slugged up and corroded and the bottom oil cover was cracked and the exterior was all rusted so I called waltergear and they said they can make it like new and rebuild it for me and that's what started me on this "make everything new" journey.

Yes sae 30 is what I'm putting back in mine when I'm ready to install it back into boat.

Well just when I thought my resto was done. I'm currently pulling the v drive out. Checked the oil and its milky rust. Sounds like I'm pulling the dip stick out of sand. What was the turn around from Walter? Were they way backed up? Was hoping I could get this pulled in the next week and send it off to them and have it back by mid May.
And yeah, the cover went ahead and broke clean in half.

I for the life of me cannot figure out how to send you a message on my phone but do you think you could give me a ring just to answer a couple questions about pulling this thing out? I would really appreciate it. (785)231-4784

Because the water pump and transmission have bearings I'm having to strip them with spray can paint remover, a wire brush and lots of brake cleaner.... very messy and time consuming when compared to sand blasting but it's a lot safer for the bearings and moving parts.

Britt let me get back to my boat tomorrow and take a bunch of pictures of my Vdrive and the adapter housing and coupling that connects it to the transmission. I remember it being kind of a pain to remove only because there is not much room to get an open ended wrench in to take the coupling bolts apart. It was so long ago I need to look at the parts again to recall exactly what I did and it will be good if you have the pics in front of you while I'm explaining what I did. I will call you tomorrow when I get off work around 5 pm PST. In mean time send me your email address and I'll email you a copy of the Walter service manual you may find the answers to your questions in there it has exploded view diagrams of the all the parts.

This is a pic with the brass pump housing removed. The rebuild kit for these Sherwood pumps consists of a press fit aluminum cup that contains a spring and a carbon faced bearing. Used a screw driver to pry out the old rusted cup and spring and removed the old cracked carbon bearing and installed new.

Transmission had slightly warped clutch plates as the prop would spin when in neutral so I rebuilt. Bought a gasket, input/output oil seal and Oring kit along with forward and reverse clutch plates and stripped the transmission for repainting. You can also replace the needle bearings and main bearing but those were in good shape so I reused them.

And thanks for the encouragement glad there are nautique freaks out there like me that like to see people do there resto work! sometimes I get burnt out on this project and just have to take a break for a week or two... Almost done with all the drive train though so moving onto the interior and gel coat will be a nice change to get me excited again.

Got my engine sensor kit in today. Between online marine stores and summit racing I was able to purchase all the GT40 sensors and switches for the engine ECM, dash guages, Vdrive low oil pressure warning and tranny neutral safety switch. My old sensors/switches still work but because I plan on getting another 15+ years out of this motor I decided to replace everything and keep the old ones as part of my boat tool kit.
