Yes, scuff (sand and board it down)with 80 grit, dust it off real good and shoot gel with wax as last coat or spray pva over it, or there are additives like patch aid and duratech.
i like waxed gel and pva but it's what works for me and is cost effective over the additives.

used a cup gun with #5 tip, water filter on the compressor. 40 psi is all my 2cyl 29 gallon compressor can maintain and am happy with the results
real happy ! this being about the 8th time i've ever shot gel.

to sand, i'm lazy, so start with 220 on the orbital wet and soapy just a knock down and wax remover, the orange peel will just be visible.
600 until orange peel looks like fingerprints on tacky paint
800-1000-1500 then buff, none of which i'm very good at.

    yes vertical, overhead doesnt matter.

Hard for me to visualize that last step - I'm guessing that 'shoot gel with wax' is not a literal term...hard to see those two mixing.

Is that more like shoot a gelcoat and then cover it with a wax coat and somehow this helps the finish and reduces the sanding?

Thanks again for the explanations....this has been a great build to watch as there's been so many skills on display.

Literaly there is wax in the gelcoat, i can only explain it as its been explaind to me or ive read.

After spraying the gel wax comes to the surface and forms an air barrier to let the gel cure hard.
gel wont dry exposed to air.

when the wax comes to the surface it shows a dull or flat finish, if there are any shiny spots its wet/tacky, spray pva on those spots and they will dry/cure, personal experience on that.
Pva washes right off with water, in some cases it peels off like saran wrap.

i dont understand the chemical process of any of it, have a good friend who is a pro who walked me thru it.
i just follow the major steps and notes especially concerning mix ratios pot life time between layers and do a lot of babysitting the layup after the tools are cleaned up.

Got flush hinges and will have to trim floor and hatch so the barrels will clear.
1st coat of gel revealed all the imperfection from factory layup (pin holes from not using gel in the mold)
easier to see and fix them this way, going to thicken up some gel to swipe on then board sand and shoot on another qaurt for finish. Click image for larger version

Weather, cold and or rain along with company for 2 weeks has stalled the project.
Why company thinks they're here on vacation to eat drink and whatever and not help work on the boat is beyond me.

some progress tho, final fit and flush hinges installed on dog box, sheer luck has dog box staying open and resting against the center step on back seat, bedded down, doweled and glassed over the front and rear hatches.
rear has big regular access now with plenty of room for the shaft log and gland maintenance.
tracking fins repaired, 1 needed straightening and welding.
seat frames cut and sent to welder, they're back, ground and painted.
still thinking front access might be modified cooler ??
