Yes, scuff (sand and board it down)with 80 grit, dust it off real good and shoot gel with wax as last coat or spray pva over it, or there are additives like patch aid and duratech.
i like waxed gel and pva but it's what works for me and is cost effective over the additives.
used a cup gun with #5 tip, water filter on the compressor. 40 psi is all my 2cyl 29 gallon compressor can maintain and am happy with the results

to sand, i'm lazy, so start with 220 on the orbital wet and soapy just a knock down and wax remover, the orange peel will just be visible.
600 until orange peel looks like fingerprints on tacky paint
800-1000-1500 then buff, none of which i'm very good at.
yes vertical, overhead doesnt matter.
