    My 2001 Super Sport Restoration

    Hi Everyone,

I am pretty new to this site however I am a longtime Nautique fan. This site is a great resource and I have been able to obtain a lot of information about my restoration project. I wanted to share some info and pictures of my restoration. I have wanted one of these boats since they were brand new, took me nearly 20 years but I finally am fulfilling my dream. I purchased this boat about 4 months ago from the second owner, who purchased the boat from the original owners who ran a ski school down south in the San Diego area. The boat lived its life in salt water and although it was equipped with sacrificial anodes all over, there was a decent amount of corrosion. The guy I bought it from had the intent on restoring it and he made it so far as to rebuild the engine and acquire most of the parts and pieces needed before he gave up on it and it sat for a number of years on jack stands in a field. I bought it right before summer with the hope that I could quickly get it into shape so we could enjoy it over the summer. I started by completely disassembling everything, all of the interior came out, the tower, windshield frame, brackets and grab handles, locker dividers and hatch cover hinges all went out for powder coating. We spent a week of 8-10 hour days in 100 degree heat, repairing damaged gel coat, filling holes for things I wasn't going to use anymore, sanding, wet sanding, buffing etc. It came out great. I still have some work to do below the waterline but that'll get done this winter. I managed to get the interior back into reasonable shape with a whole lot of cleaning and since we have little kids we decided to try and get a few seasons out of the interior before we redo everything. I plan to do sea dek flooring (I have the accy kit coming from dek designs at the moment), all new vinyl with some updated colors and patterns. As I mentioned before the previous owner had rebuilt the engine but never got it finished up and running. I got it all assembled with new exhaust manifolds and risers, all new hose, new raw water pump, new alternator, new starter, new starter solenoid, first I figured out that my port keypad was barely functional, so much so that I couldn't get it started. I finally got that solved and got it fired up but it kept blowing up oil filters. We determined that the oil pressure regulator had frozen, so I bought a brand new oil pump, we pulled the engine and installed it, sure enough the old one was frozen up with assembly lube. I just finished a project to replace all of the gauges, along with a new steering wheel, it came out pretty nice. I have plans to do the interior as mentioned, a custom ballast system, custom surf gate system, underwater lighting, and some stereo improvements. So far we are enjoying the boat immensely.

What guages did you use? Where did you get the steering wheel?

Hey Chris, they are Faria platinum series gauges. I went with a gps speedo and deleted all of the pitot system. Steering wheel is a Nardi that I found on offer up. It matched the factory steering wheel hub bolt pattern without any trouble.

I ended up replacing both of the Keypads with the replacements from Miami nautique. Can’t say enough good things about them, they even helped me obtain the master code for the boat too. I gotta throw a shout out to Marty Mabe also, since I’ve always wanted one of these boats, one of things I thought was so cool were the little personalized “engineered for”plaques. He set me up with a custom set, they are really nice!

Yes they are really good guys at miami nautique I've gone twice now to pic up parts and are always super helpful . I'm gonna have to hit them up aswell for help with the master code because I'm at a wall now without getting the pme unlocked. Po of my boat wired in a keyed ignition even though both key pads seem to be working ‍

They should be able to get it for you pretty easily. Just have your hull number handy I’ve gone back and forth on completely removing the PME and doing my own thing, I decided to just go for the factory stuff for now. If it dies again in the future I’ll do something different. Had a mishap today at the lake. My wife was driving while I ski’d, she didn’t see me or hear me yelling at her to turn and she ran over a really shallow rocky area. It’s maybe 1.5 foot deep, unmarked, she munched the prop pretty good and busted the rudder off. Looks like I’m spending about 1200 bucks to fix it. Somehow, nothing on the hull hit anything and the prop shaft support and shaft don’t seem to be bent or have any issues. The rudder sheared off clean and didn’t damage anything else. We had to hitch a ride back in with the sheriff, at least nobody got hurt. Cracked me up a little after the fact, the boat of course carried on beyond the shallow bit, and I let go of the rope and ended up coming to a stop, standing on my skis still, on the rocks.

Oh no!!!! Fuuuck atleast you're able to joke about it lol. Dude I was thinking the same exact thing about the pme aswell. My boat doesn't even have half of the **** on the panel anyways like the ballast tanks and shower or heater so what the heck. All my gauges are trash and I was wondering if I even needed a depth gauge.. you reconfirmed it for me lol

It totally sucked, I’m just glad that nobody got hurt and the damage is all on parts that are easily replaceable. Could have been much worse for sure.
I have been talking to a guy from a Facebook page, new wire marine I believe it is. They build custom switch panels and stuff with really awesome parts for boats. It sounded like it was going to cost around 1200 bucks to build two custom cut panels to fit in the stock locations with custom switches that contain their own circuit breakers etc. since I had already purchased the port keypad and my PME is still working well I figured I would just invest in the stock starboard keypad for now and just run it until something breaks. I can confirm that all of my new gauges worked nicely, the GPS speedo is really nice, works well, very responsive, and on this gauge everything is internal, no antenna needed. Literally just power and ground and it’s good to go
