Do you really need a new manifold and riser? No way to get the broken part of the bolts out?

Sorry if this is a silly question, I have never pulled these parts off.

I've read that these manifolds have a shelf life. Considering they are cast iron and water cooled, 25 years can create a lot of corrosion. After seining the inside of these, I am just going to replace both sides.

The leaking front transmission seal is apparently quite common. That was the cause of my bilge mess on my 1997 Ski. Replacing it wasn't that difficult but then it was a direct drive, not a v-drive.

If you run in salt the manifolds last about 7 years. Freshwater is a different story. I bought my Holman Moody powered Mustang 32 years ago for 150.00. Owners mechanic said the original manifolds would be bad, but make sure you look them over carefully owner didn't want to go through the hassle of finding something and installing so he passed it on. They are going on 52 years now and if they leaked tomorrow I'd have them repaired- it's a big part of the HM look. Since you can still buy new ones it just might be a smart move but make sure you check them out carefully before installation. I recently bought a set that had a manufacturing defect that should have been caught before shipment, set me back 2-3 weeks to straighten out.

If you snapped the hex heads off the riser bolts it's not necessarily a bad thing. If you can remove the riser, a little penetrate oil and some vice grips may be all you need to remove the remainder of the bolts. It's not uncommon for those long bolts to break like that. You could save yourself the trouble of removing the manifolds, too. New riser, gaskets, and bolts may be all you need. I would see how bad the transmission leak is before tackling a repair. Sometimes it's just a shaft seal on the transmission that leaks a little. Keep an eye on the fluid in the meantime. Good luck and a beautiful boat.

Thank you. Unfortunately the bolts snapped off flush.

dhmcfadin if you were local I would get that snapped bolt out for you. I also share the same sentiment of Jeff regarding the leak. I have a very small leak at the pan for my oil drain that I have not been able to fix. I believe at this point I will need to pull the engine to fix and I will likely just keep using the boat as is!

Thanks for the offer. I replaced the manifolds/risers over the weekend. Glad I ordered the set because the bolts broke on the other side as well. Once I got the lower manifold off, the corrosion on the runners was significant. Now it won’t be something I have to worry about in the future.

Ironically enough, went skiing on Sunday and threw a couple towels underneath the trans oil pan. Not a drop on this outing.
