    SAN Engine Removal

We've had a small oil leak from the oil drain hose at the sump for a while. It has eventually got to the point that it really needs looking at..... i have tried various ways to remove the hose and fitting from the sump but with no success. its too tight to get any tools in there to try and remove it. So I'm thinking the only other option is to lift the engine up enough to get access to sort out the leak. Has anyone removed an engine from a SAN, any tips?

I was thinking the easiest way would be to remove the bolts from the aluminium engine rails rather than disconnect at the levelling nuts. I'm thinking this may prevent any levelling adjustments issues when reinstalling since they are rigid connections. The other disconnection point is either at transmission or at the vdrive. I'm thinking the transmission may be the simplest point of disconnection.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    RE: SAN Engine Removal

First make some room.. What year of SAN?
Take out the back bench, cushions and all. Make sure the floor is free. Take out the rear ballast tanks. Cover everything so it doesn't get dirty! Take of the sunpad hatch(es).

Now that you have room and everything is covered you can start with the engine... It's pretty easy to get the engine out of the SAN. We did it in 2-3hours. First disconnect the waterhoose at the waterpump. Disconnect the exhaust hoses. Disconnect power cables (2 plugs at the engine and the battery cables). Disconnect the V-drive axle with the shaft, this is the most fidling work. At last you can disconnect the engine mounting bolts where the bolts are screwed in the aluminium/boat. The engine still rests on the boat then and you can lift it up together with the tranny and v-drive.

        Hello,
You might just cut the old hose off and replace it.

well, finally sorted out whats been causing my oil leak.....and worked out how to remove the sump plug/bolt. (i cut the hose off the end of the plug, put a long screw driver in the end where the hose was to act as a leaver to losen the bolt, able to turn it out by hand after initially loosening it.)

my oil leak has been being caused by rust around the sump bolt hole. i've cleaned off the rust with a wire brush and sand paper then coated the area with rust converter, going to try to repaint down there. then re-fit the sump bolt with thread tape..... hopefully this will top the sump from leaking... fingers crossed. :???:

          heres some pics

does your pan have the coating on it? i have replaced a few of the oil pans that do not have the coating they rust all the way through and if you try to loosen up that hose fitting it just break off the pan. put this is the first one ive seen with the coating that is rusting. glad you caught it early. i would coat it with everything i could to try and slow down that rust or you wil be pulling that eng and replacing that pan. them suckers aint cheap either. congrats on the fix hope it works out 4 u

I thought i had the sump sorted out....... but it keep leaking  ended up pulling the engine out on the weekend. found 3 rust holes the size of a knitting needle around the sump bolt. discovered a few other bits and pieces that needed attention as well. taken heaps of photos to share.... will post when i get a chance.
