    curse of the white cat

after a crappy day at work, i decide to go launch the 72 for her first ride this year. the last month has been exciting. i changed a blown fuse in an outboard and the darn thing caught on fire the next day. i dumped my brothers formula in the road. five of the boats that i winterized/stabilized have carb/efi problems. bad gimbals. broken exhaust flappers. just a landslide.

i was headed to the barn to diagnose an overheating problem on a rover we are going 4 wheeling saturday and just decided it could put off untill midnight.

i put the belts on, suck some tranny fluid out, threw the battery in and she fired up third crank. i hooked her up and headed to the ramp. this white cat crosses the road...............

i get to the ramp and the trailer was floating. i forgot the transom straps. duh. i guy showed up to drop in his bass boat, so i let him in front. i double check everything. yeah right.

i back the truck in and get out. when the door slammed i heard a loud pop and the truck starts rolling in slow. i caught it , but the parking brake cable snapped. strike one.

she fires first hit and i let her warm up. the starboard side exhaust chase is leaking a tad and the clydesdales aren't sealing the back of the water pump to well. no fuel leaks, hitting on all eight, all drains and hoses are good. note to self. replace gaskets made out of beer boxes on an annual basis. strike two.

we have had major storms over the last few days, so complete trees are floating. the sun just went down and the ambient light makes it hard to pick out the bouys from the debris. i let the oil warm up then run hard for 20-25 minutes. we get back to the last bridge before the ramp and i decide to do a little docking manuver practice. i'm getting a little vibration in reverse. :?: strike three.

i let my buddy off in the murk because there is no dock. while he is backing the truck in, i make a run to the bridge and back. nice and smooth, but reverse is just terrible. then i realize i forgot to tell him about the cable.............

he backs in and jacknifes the trailer so it is completely level on a crooked ramp. just the way i like it. i yell at him and tell him the brake cable is broken, so just sit in the truck. i hook the front end and tell him to go.

i have an 01 f250 powersmoker with a 5 speed plus granny. he picked low*low and almost threw me in over the transom as i was pulling the light.
he stripped out the turnbuckle, but the safety chain held. strike four.

my vibration was not one, but two ice bags hooked on the prop. down to just three strikes.

we head to the barn to work on the rover. i gave the white cat the finger as we drove by.

Sound like a pretty typical day on a boat to me.

Hey I had my parking brake mechanism actually split in two. It was not a fun day at the ramp, but I have the slush box in my powersmoker.

For a bad day with the boat see this link:
