People who installed their own ND tower....

Is there a good way to work with that kitty hair resin they give you. It doesnt seem to stick very well and wants to drip down a lot. I remember someone saying they didnt even use the stuff, but I figured they gave it to me for a reason. So far all I have done is make a mess with this stuff with very little getting on the area I need it on. Besides being awkward and a PITA, what did you do to lay the stuff down, or did you not and do you have any problems with it?

I remember it being really messy. I had some in my hair and all over my shirt. I just remember putting towels down, so it wouldn't get on the carpet. Sorry, I don't have any tips.

Use duct tape, the good stuff, and lots of it. Oh yeah, and old towels. It is definitely a pain, be patient and keep telling yourself "I only have to this once".

They send it out with every tower that they sell. Mostly because of the other brands of boats that they sell towers for. You have to remember what kind of boat you are installing it on. The glass and gel of a correct craft is far superior to the other brands. My dealer has installed many of these and factory towers on boats that did not have one and he has had no problems. He worked for correct craft for 13 years before he got a dealership so I trust him.

I agree, it was kind of messy. You don't need to use a lot, only enough to fill any voids.

so you are saying that as long as I put enough on the plate to fill the gaps, I should be fine? I had thought about puting plywood backers in to help it but there isnt any mor eroom to make the plates bigger than the plate can cover.

I "back buttered" the backing plate, then held it in line with the holes I drilled using a long bolt in 2 oposite corners, then a couple pieces of Kentucky chrome to hold it steady. I added about 1/2 inch of thinckness to the location and it filled some of the voids because the underside of the gunnel was pretty rough.

I had the carpet out, so I was less worried about spillage.

the plywood is a good idea, buttered with bondo or the dynoglass it will fill all your voids and add strength.

I put as much as i could on the backing plate, mounded it up everywhere except where the holes were. Put it on and tightened the bolts and squeezed the fiberglass into the voids and out the sides. I have had no problems. Installation was on a 91 barefoot nautique.
