    Easy quick water temp question

My boat is pretty new to me so I am still getting the feel for it. Lat night was my first time out with it this year making it 3 times out total with this boat. It is a 93 spor with a converted protec ignition gt40 351. Temp runs about 160 or so when running and we stop and pick up a rider and shut it down, and when I start it 5 or so minutes later, themp goes to 200 or so but comes back down once we get underway. I am figuring this is normal but just wanted to clarify.

Also, what thermostat should be in this boat? My 85 had a 142 stat in it and it never ran any hotter than 130 when riding and the shutdown-startup temp was in the 170 range. I am comparing it all to my old boat and just wanted confirmation, is that what similar boats are seeing?

As far as the temp going up, when you shut your boat down you cease the cooling process by doing so. Unless your impeller is burned up or something is seriously wrong it is best to let your boat run for a bit to cool itself down if it is tending to run hot. This is why your temp jumps up when you start the boat and then drops when the water starts circulating through your block again.

I personally don't like to have the engine getting above 180 at any point. Anywhere between 120 and 140 are good running temps.
How 'bout a little reverse action...

160 is spot on for the new boat. Thats what its supposed to run with the 142 'stat.

It sounds like your '86 had a bad thermostat in it- you shouldnt have been running at 130. It should have been at 160 as well. 120-140 is too cold!

That doesn't sound terribly unusual to me. Could also be that your voltage drops right after a start- low voltage causes the temp gauge to read high.

I figured it was just the hot engine block heating up the water that wasnt moving in the water jacket in the block. It was decently hight but it came down right away so I figured it was normal. I thought they ran about 160 or so, I have a friend whos 96 was about that but I couldnt remember what the temp when we would start it between runs. It is probably about the same. Thanks for the help guys

160 should be good...and small spikes are not horrible. Be careful in August when the water temps are up there....then you can really spike if you not careful.

Gotta hit this once again because I replaced my water pump impeller and it runs about 150-160 now when at wakeboarding speeds but at surfing speeds it was seeing as high as 175 give or take 5. I know surfing is slower and super strain on the engine but I question is if this is something wo worry about.

Yesterday I was having some spikes and I looked at the RWP and put it back on backwards. I ran it at an idle and burned up the impeller and the temp guage read 185 or so when I shut it down. I keyed on a few minutes later and it read 220. I didnt run it again untill it was way down and I got towed in when I couldnt figure it out. I found bits of my impeller in the strainer bowl and cleaned it out, replaced it and this is what has happened since. There is where this is coming from, I just wanted to make sure this was normal, becaus eI never surfed my boat until after the impeller was replaced.
