Wood swim step stain???

Is there any specific stain that Ishould use?

Any recommendations?

Do I have to sand the wood surface before hand?

it works best if you sand it with a 100-120 grit paper and then apply a teak oil to it which can be found at most boat dealers or online. It is pretty cheap like 10-15 per bottle but will last you for 5-8 times of refinishing the platform.

I just refinished my teak platform, the original owner painted this awful brown shellac on it that was starting to peel of. So after using a citrus based paint stripper, I basically cycled up through the following wet/dry sand paper (150, 220, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500) where I would sand it, let it dry, apply a coat of teak oil, repeat. There are a bunch of other posts on this procedure, and for me it produced fantastic results. Make sure you wiped off the excess oil and let it completely dry between coats of teak oil.

By the way, I used the StarBrite brand of teak oil. They have a 3 step process, but I only needed the actual teak oil (step 3) since the prior finish had atleast prevented it from going grey over time.
