    OIL

Just wanted to take a poll to see what everybody is running in their 5.7L excaliber.

I have been running Shell Rotella 15W-40, Both the owners manual and the shop manual wants you running a 15W-40 with a SJ spec.....

As of about a year ago, that is not true. The zinc was removed from the multi-weight Rotella (15w40, for example) but was not removed from the straight weights (30w, 40w).

Has something changed, or were you simply making a blanket statement?

I just looked at the bottle of Shell Rotella 15w40 and it states CJ-4. According to Bob is the oil guy it contains 1504 PPM of Zinc. Here's the test: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...52#Post1056852

                            as for zinc
it helps on less wear on the cam and lifters

The 15w40 meets the API CI or CJ standard, the straight weights only meet CF. There was a significant reduction in the allowable zinc and phosphorus between the CF and CJ specs. The Rotella 15w40 went to CJ4 over a year ago. According to Shell's website, the straight weights are unchanged and still have the zinc.

Read this article if you want to know why zinc and phosphorus are important: http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/e...ech/index.html

Its important to note that all Ford 351w's in our boats are flat tappet motors. The Chevies after ~1996 are all roller, so they can run oils with the lower zinc levels without issue.
