RE: WOT good or bad?
How long? What RPM?
When you are breaking in an engine, It needs to be run at WOT to seat the rings.
My 1997 ski has 1970 hours on a GT-40 motor. Every time it goes out, I usually hit WOT at least once, and sometimes I even hold it to see what RPM it peaks at. Usually it goes slightly past 5,000.

RE: WOT good or bad?
Wide open throttle, and 5000 rpm for a short period tiem will not hurt.
Continuous operation at 5000 will. For my Engine, a GT-40 the max continuous rpm is 4200.
Another way to think about is is this, and this is for my engine. Below 4200 RPM, no time limit. Above 4200 rpm, ok for a short period, do not prolong. Above 5000, not recommended.
